A. Course Description: Explore relevant and current topics on “building prevention-focused
communities.” Attendance during various presentations at the Substance Abuse Prevention
Training conference and a follow-up face-to-face meeting are required. Through
participation, discussion, reflection, and analysis you’ll create a plan for professional
development and application.
B. Textbook
There is no textbook required. You will use the conference brochure and website:

C. Learning Objectives:
1. Prevention Training objectives:
o Learn more about substance abuse prevention tools and strategies
o Gain awareness of local policy development
o Share lessons learned and success stories
o Network and build relationships
2. Define a thesis or topic question as it pertains to your profession
3. Explore conference topics to answer your question
4. Create an action plan to apply what you’ve learned
D. Attendance in both are required for credit:
a. 8 total sessions, including keynotes, during the 2-day conference
b. A post-conference class meeting is scheduled for Friday, June 12th, from 2:30-4:00
pm in the Acacia Room at Kalahari Resort.
E. Grades: Letter grade A-F. 100 total points.
A= ≥ 90 points, B= 80-89 points, C= 70-79 points, D= 60-69 points, F = <60 points
F. Assignments:
1. Pre-conference:
a. Read conference brochure, list the sessions you plan to attend, send the list to the
instructor. (10 points)
b. Formulate one professional question in writing you would like to explore during
the conference. Discuss how the answer to this question will impact you, your
profession, and/or the organization that you are representing. Be prepared to
share this question with the class during the conference follow-up meeting.
c. Submit electronically (typed in an e-mail) to me prior to the conference (June
10th). (15 points)
2. During conference
a. Attend eight conference sessions.
b. Provide a written description of each session (form will be provided) by the end
of the conference. (25 points)
3. Post conference, class meeting
a. Attend post class meeting (25 points)
b. Be prepared to discuss what you learned in general and about your topic question.
c. Submit a well- written action plan for how you will apply what you have learned
(1-2 pages) by e-mail to me by 11:59 pm, June 15th. (25 points)
