We employ students as in-hall paraprofessionals (desk managers, community advisers), desk receptionists, student custodians, upholstery assistants and central office staff. In-hall student staff receive a double room as part of their pay package in addition to a semester stipend. Some of our in-hall staff also receive a meal plan as part of their compensation. We also hire students for positions such as snow crew removal, hall custodial assistants, summer conference crew and summer hall staff. Recruitment for academic year positions occurs early in the spring semester before the next school year. Application information is available online (www.uwsp.edu/resliving/pages/ employment/student.aspx.) In addition to our website, we share information about application timelines via our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Live on Living in residence halls is an important and dynamic part of students’ lives. In addition to supporting students in their academic pursuits, residence hall staff help create a sense of community in each of the halls. Learning how to communicate with roommates, set expectations for their community and connecting with campus resources are just some of the advantages of living in residence halls. As students move into their second year at UW-Stevens Point, they can put into practice the skills they learned during their first year. Most students become involved in student organizations and many choose to become leaders within our halls or their student groups. All first-year and sophomore students are required to live in residence halls at four-year UW schools. This is a UW Board of Regents policy; you can read more about the policy and how we interpret that policy at www.uwsp.edu/resliving/pages/ faqspolicies/bor.aspx. This policy was put in place because numerous studies have documented that students who live in residence halls are more successful academically than students living in off-campus venues (particularly for the first two years). Success was measured using grade point averages, whether a student stayed in school, and whether they graduated. Please remind your student that residence hall staff are available to assist or direct them to resources available on campus.
