However you can meet with me face-to-face on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 PM to 5 PM. Additionally, you can meet with me face-to-face or over Skype by scheduling an appointment separately. Course Description Survey of the operations functions of organizations with emphasis on design and control decisions. Qualitative and quantitative problem-solving methods used to enhance managerial competence in the operations function. The prerequisites are ECO250, ISM280, ACC202 and either ACC201 or ACC218 Course Materials 1. Required Textbook is Operations Management (11th edition) by Heizer and Render. The bookstore has the text packaged with MyOMLab. 2. MyOMLab is required since that is where students will take their quizzes and exams. This software is available at the bookstore and direct from Pearson. Buy it early and use the password code to access it no later than the first two days of classes! We have a very good deal with the publisher to buy the package in the bookstore! But, if you already have a cheap copy of the text, simply purchase MyOMLab. 3. You may access the e-text and the MyOMLab on a trial basis for 17 days. You could then determine if the e-version will work for it; it is cheaper! Course Hosting Site This course will be taught face to face but will make extensive use of the Canvas Learning Management System used by UNCG – see canvas.uncg.edu. Course Objectives The following basic objectives represent important learning goals of the course organization and content: 1) Provide a basic understanding of the production/operations function of an organization and its relationship to the rest of the organization. 2) Provide a basic understanding of the major decision areas, support systems, and tools used to solve the problems and provide decision-making information for production/operations management. 3) Provide an opportunity to apply some of the tools and techniques used for production/operations management problems. Course Learning Outcomes Upon completing the course, the student should be able to: 1) Differentiate between productivity, effectiveness, efficiency, and other performance measures for operations management. 2) Explain the factors that make a service operation more difficult to manage as compared to a manufacturing operation. 3) Compare and contrast the different types of conversion systems (i.e., project, job shop, batch flow, line flow, and continuous flow processes). 4) Use project management techniques to plan a project. 5) Develop and use a process control chart for managing quality. 6) Understand the role played by total quality management in organizations. 7) Distinguish between long range, intermediate range, and short range capacity planning in operations management. 8) Discuss the role of logistics in operations management. 9) Understand the role of a forecasting system in the operations of an organization. 10) Explain the role of strategic sourcing in the procurement of materials for operations management 11) Describe the typical objectives and constraints in the aggregate planning problem related to both manufacturing and service organizations. 12) Differentiate the inventory management concerns between dependent demand items and independent demand items. 13) Understand the value and importance of various Lean Systems/Total Quality Management (“JIT/TQM” or “Pull”) systems and techniques. 14) Describe how operational and supply chain processes enable firms to deliver sustainable products and services to the marketplace. Case Studies, including video case studies. Quizzes and exams. Discussions in Canvas Learning Management System. It is imperative that every student log into Canvas and check on the course at least once every day. Periodic announcements and reminders will be placed there. Performance Evaluation & Grading The course grade is based on the following evaluations: 2 examinations (midterm and final) each of which covers different topics, 10 quizzes and 2 case studies. Each examination will cover several topics, last for at least 2 hours and consist of multiple choice questions many of which will be based on numerical problems. Each examination will have to be taken online over a period of 48 consecutive hours and students have to take the examination during these days and before the due date. Quizzes will cover one module each, comprise of multiple choice questions (many of whom will be based on numerical problems) and need to be taken frequently through the course. Each quiz should take between 30-60 minutes, but unlike examinations, this time limit will not be enforced. Due dates for each quiz will be announced in class as and when the associated topics are covered. Each quiz will have to be taken by the students by its due date. The 2 case studies will cover two separate applications of operations management in real-world applications and will require students to give qualitative, written answers. All quizzes and the 2 examinations in this course will have to be taken in MyOMLab, which should be accessed through the course website on the Canvas Learning Management System. That is why it is imperative that each student have access to it by the start of the course. No bonus points are available in this course. However, if such is made available during the course, the instructor will let everyone know with at least two weeks’ notice along with the nature of the assignments that earn bonus points and the applicable rules. Grades are based on the following "absolute" scale (i.e., there will not be any "curving").
