Des Moines Register 04-23-07 Dateline Iowa REGISTER STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES City police arrest 36 over festival weekend AMES — The Ames Police Department arrested 36 people during Veishea weekend, according to statistics released Sunday night. An additional 46 people were issued citations. The majority of arrests from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon were for accusations of public intoxication. Forty-three of the 46 citations alleged that people possessed alcohol under the legal age. Ames Police Lt. Jeff Brinkley said he was unaware of any major altercations or problems over the weekend. "Things went pretty smoothly, and we were happy with that," Brinkley said. Other Ames law enforcement agencies did not have statistics available Sunday. Veishea is an annual Iowa State University celebration, and events this year recognized the school's upcoming 150th anniversary. ISU gets $4.2 million for botanical research AMES — Iowa State University's Center for Research on Botanical Dietary Supplements will receive about $4.2 million over three years for research into the health benefits of several botanicals. The money was made available through the National Institutes of Health's Office of Dietary Supplements. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Ia., chairman of the Senate panel that funds the National Institutes of Health, said the money will allow the center to study botanicals used as ingredients in dietary supplements. Research will center on the anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties of St. John's wort, prunella and echinacea.
