Independent Work :
Complete the third section of Vocabulary Ch. 3 packet. (Sentence Check One). Check your answers with another student
or with the Vocabulary Chapter 3 PPT on the teacher page.
Classwork:
1. The class discussed Mood, Tone, Author’s Purpose, and Theme
2. Mood is the reader’s response to what they have read. Mood = Me
3. Author’s Purpose = What the author wanted or intended the reader to get out of the text. You must be able to
support your reasoning with evidence from the text.
4. Tone = Author’s Attitude. You may want to think of it as Tone = Teller, just be sure that you don’t get confused
and think it is the narrator’s attitude– See the attached list of words to help you determine what the author’s
attitude toward the text is.
5. Theme – The class came up with a working definition of what theme is. See the photo of the Frayer Models
below. Then we discussed what the word universal means. We determined that something universal is something
that everyone, no matter where they live or what their circumstances can relate to. Then we made a list of
universal themes. Finally, we related this to the story “Eleven” and allowed the class to revise what they thought
the theme might be. Again, you must be able to support your reasoning with evidence from the text.
Please complete this work on your own and turn in for credit.
