COLEMAN FIELD: HOME OF THE BASEBALL BEAVERS All of the Beavers' home games are played at Ralph Coleman Field, located on Washington Way, next to the Dixon Recreation Center and one block from Gill Coliseum on the Oregon State campus. Coleman Field has a seating capacity of 2,000 permanent bleachers and may be expanded to accommodate 3,000 with portable seating. Over 3,000 fans have been known to gather for the annual Washington State twinbill. The natural grass playing surface has long been considered one of the finest in collegiate baseball. It is surrounded by a six-foot fence that rises to 20 feet in left field. The distances are 355 to the left field line, 400 to deep centerfield, and 330 down the right field line. It is 385 to the left center field and 365 to the right center field gap. In 1981, the Ralph Coleman dedication honored the Beaver alum and head coach of Beaver baseball from 1923 through 1931 and 1938 through 1966-36 years as head baseball coach and 47 all told with the OSU coaching staff. Coleman compiled a record of 560-317, a winning percentage of .639. The most recent project, through the efforts of the Corvallis Beaver Huddle support group and the Pastega Bottling Company of Corvallis is the Scott Halbrook electronic scoreboard. It is dedicated to the memory of the 1981 freshman outfielder, who died in a freak accident just three days prior to his first season with the Beavers. His inspiration spurred OSU to the next two Northern Division crowns. BEAVER COACHING STAFF Assistant coach Kurt Kemp (Oregon State, 1983) 3rd year at OSU Kemp coached the junior varsity program and assisted Riley with the varsity in his 1983 graduate assistant capacity. He served as an assistant to the Corvallis American Legion program for several years in the early 1980's. He spent four seasons as an assistant to Dave Dangler at Yavapai, a two-year school located in Prescott, Arizona. Yavapai's best season under Dangler and Kemp was 1986, when the Roughriders finished third in the nation among junior colleges with a 40-19 record. Kurt starred at shortstop for Corvallis High and moved on to Head Coach Jack Riley Pac-lO North Coach of the Year: 1982, 1983 and 1986 (Linfield, 1960) 467-298 in his 18th year at OSU and overall Linn-Benton Community College where he was a first team allleague and second team all-region choice in 1979 and 1980 at catcher. He played third base and catcher at Portland State and third base and shortstop at Southern Utah in 1982. Born Sept. 2, 1960 in Corvallis, Kemp graduated from Corvallis High School in 1978 and received his degree in business ad- ministration from Oregon State in 1983. Kemp and his wife, Marcie, live in Corvallis. Assistant coach Del Kerber Jack Riley weathered a lot of storms through his 17 years of manicuring Coleman Field into one of the nation's finest collegiate diamonds and getting his proteges to punish it with hard, aggressive play. As the years have progressed, the message keeps seeping in at a steadily increasing rate. Riley not only instills his own competitive fires into his regulars, but sees them mature into winners off the field as well. Winners with educations. Riley molds and motivates teams. He relishes the work he can do inside McAlexander Fieldhouse as much as he does the bottom of the ninth of a pivotal divisional showdown. Riley's Beavers have won four conference titles, and led the Beavers to post-season play four of the last seven years, three with national rankings. Riley ranks second in career wins at Oregon State to Ralph Coleman's 560. The Beaver head coach was named Pac-1 0 Northern Division Coach of the Year in 1982, 1983 and 1986 and in 1982 he was Regional Coach of the Year and a finalist for National Coach of the Year. In the 80s, he assembled teams that won three Northern Division titles and two Northern Division post-season tournaments. In 1986, the Beavers posted a 39-15 record, setting a school record for wins, and finished third at the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Beavers also advanced to the NCAA West Regional in 1983 and THE RILEy RECORD Win Loss Pcf. 1985. Riley earned all-conference honors in basketball four times and three times in baseball at Linfield. As a senior, he was the NAIA's stolen base champ and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He played three years of professional baseball before moving on to the coaching ranks. After several years in the high school ranks he moved on to Lower Columbia College as head baseball coach, head basketball coach and athletic director. During his tenure at LCC, his baseball teams won four straight conference titles including the state championship in 1970. His record at LCC was 97-31. He graduated from Linfield College in 1960 and obtained his master's degree from Oregon State in 1971 before taking over as head coach in 1973. Jack and his wife, Jean, have a daughter, Pam, and two sons, Mike and Mickey. Pam created the current OSU baseball logo as a graphic designer in San Diego, while Mickey has returned from his position with the national baseball program in Australia to assist his father with the Beavers. (Oregon State, 1964) 16th year at OSU Before joining the O5U staff, Kerber was one of the more successful high school coaches in the state. He started his career at Dallas (OR) High School from 1965 through 1970. His teams claimed one league championship along with two second place finishes and three third place finishes. Kerber returned to OSU in 1970 to coach the junior varsity program for two years. He also coached at Grants Pass High School revitalizing the school and summer programs before returning to OSU for the third time. On the field, Kerber serves as Riley's assistant coach and pitching coach. Off the field he is the manager for all OSU athletic facilities in charge of event management and maintenance. A four-sport athlete in three years of competition at Serra High School in Salem from 1955-59, he pitched at Oregon State in 1960. Originally from Salem, Del is a 1964 graduate of OSU. He received a B.S. degree in Physical Education and returned to OSU for his Master's degree in 1967. He and his wife, vicky have two daughters, Amanda and Melody. Del was born Jan. 30, 1941 in Salem.
