The New and Improved Mathematics TEKS Toolkit Danielle Seabold Mathematics Leadership The Charles A. Dana Center CAMT, 2006 Charles A. Dana Center Our mission has been to strengthen the mathematics and science preparation and achievement of all students through supporting alignment of all the key components of mathematics and science education: the state standards, accountability system, assessment, and standards for teacher certification. We have focused our efforts in recent years on providing resources to help local communities meet the demands of the education system—by strengthening mathematics and science professional development, and by publishing and disseminating mathematics and science education resources. Why are we here? Early 2005, the Texas legislature adopted the revised secondary mathematics Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). As mandated by the legislature, the revised secondary TEKS are to be implemented in Fall 2006. – What does this mean for us as teachers and educational/instructional leaders? – Where can we go for updated resources aligned to the revised TEKS? My School… On a scale of 1-10, rate the effect that the revised TEKS will have on the mathematics department or program at your school. 1 = Revised TEKS? What are those? We won’t need to change a thing. 10 = We have to revise our curriculum, instruction, and professional development opportunities. It looks like a lot will change.
