Student Success Team Meeting Minutes from September 9, 2010 The Student Success Team met for the first time on September 9, 2010 in BA 105 at the Meramec campus. The meeting began at 3:30 p.m. with a welcome and an ice breaker led by Teresa Huether, co-chair of the Student Success Team. Donna Dare, co-chair of the Student Success Team, reminded the group of its charge based on the following purpose statement approved by the College Leadership Team to support the work associated with Achieving the Dream: Purpose of the Student Success Team The primary purpose of the Student Success Team is to serve as the college’s strategy team for affecting student success, student learning outcomes, and, ultimately, institutional effectiveness. To fulfill its purpose, the Student Success Team will: • Analyze data related to 5 indicators of student success i) completion of developmental courses and progression to credit-bearing courses, ii) completion of gatekeeper courses, particularly first college-level or degree-credit courses in math and English, iii) completion of attempted courses with a C or better, iv) persistence from term to term and year to year, and v) attainment of credentials • Identify specific factors that influence gaps in student achievement within the context of those indicators • Engage college constituencies in analyzing factors that influence gaps in student achievement • Develop and prioritize strategies for addressing achievement gaps across the institution • Collaborate with the Assessment Council and other mission-based assessment subcommittees to identify related assessment needs • Review recommendations related to student success and student learning outcomes from the Assessment Council that can potentially influence the student success agenda of the college • Make recommendations and requests to the Leadership Team and/or various college councils (e.g., the Presidents’ Council, the VCASA/VPs Councils, the Academic Dean’s Council, the college governance councils, DFAC, DESC, the Campus Leadership Teams), as applicable and appropriate, regarding resource allocation and budgeting regarding student success and student learning outcomes • Oversee the ongoing implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of goals, strategies, and measurable outcomes related to student success and student learning outcomes Donna asked if anyone in the group had questions or comments regarding the charge of the team or the 2010 – 2011 plan that was submitted to the Achieving the Dream (ATD) organization. A brief discussion was held. Greg Works and Denise Coyne commented on the STLCC data sent to ATD. They made clear that an ATD cohort is defined differently from an STLCC cohort. They told the group that an ATD cohort includes the following attributes: • New to STLCC (not necessarily new to college) • Full or Part time student • Degree or Certificate Seeking They also informed the group that the national data set is on the ATD website. Kelli Burns led the group through a visit to the ATD website and showed where the link to the instructional video was (http://www.achievingthedream.org/media/atddatatools/Institutional_Dashboard_Training_Video. swf) so the group could view it at their leisure and then search national data they might want to review. She also showed how to access college data, eventually to include data for the ATD cohort, via the IRP portal (http://collegeweb.stlcc.edu/irp/thefacts.htm).She gave a brief overview of what kinds of data can be found there that are pertinent to the ATD-related work of the college. She informed the group that they will all have a Hyperion License to access STLCC data. Teresa closed the meeting with giving out homework as well as the dates/locations of the remaining meetings. For fall 2010, all meetings will be held from 3:30 – 5 pm on the Meramec campus. • Sept 20 (Confluence room) • Sept 30 (SC 125 – small dining room) • Oct 13 (SC 125 – small dining room) • Oct 26 (Confluence room) • Nov 10 (Confluence room) • Nov 23 (Confluence room) The meeting ended at 5 pm.
