Meeting Minutes from October 13, 2010

The meeting opened with Teresa welcoming the team and saying that the team will look at the

ATD goal: Complete courses with a “C” or better by examining the 20 courses with the highest enrollment and the10 courses with the least rate of success. She said the team would also begin to look at policy and practices.

She thanked those who were able to attend the Oct 11 th meeting at Forest Park with Heather

Wathington Ph.D. from the University of Virginia – our ATD data coach. Teresa said that Dr.

Wathington’s two day visit was very helpful in a number of ways – Dr. Wathington thought the data we examined so far was spot on for our ATD purposes and praised our IRP department for the ease of accessing data. Dr. Wathington also noted that we are ready for the “WHY” phase of the initiative. She said we cannot determine strategies without knowing the “WHY” behind the data. This is why we will begin to talk about policies and practices at STLCC.

John also commented on Heather’s visit. He told us that Dr. Wathington said “The students are not the problem. The College is the solution!”

John then presented the top 20 courses with the highest enrollment of students within our defined STLCC cohort. (We use new to higher educ. instead of new to STLCC.) His first slide showed data across the district. His next slide broke this data down by race. His last slide broke this data down by race and gender. He did the same for the top 10 courses (with at least 100 enrolled students) with the least amount of success. The data was once again thought provoking.

Donna asked the team to look at a data analysis worksheet she put together. The sheet contained the following questions:

• What data point provided most alarms you? Why?

• What are the primary factors (existing policies, procedures, and/or practices) that could be affecting this student success outcome?

• What policies, procedures, and/or practices do you need to know more about in order to begin to identify potential strategies that might impact this outcome if we as a college decide to address this goal?

• What, if any, additional resources will you need to begin identifying potential strategies for consideration if we as a college decide to address this goal?

• What if….? (Dream big!)

Lively conversation ensued.

Teresa spoke about the ongoing creation of the campus based success teams and their connection with the college wide student success team as well as with each other. She began to define the purpose of to be planned campus forums and how the Student Success Team members can facilitate discussion at the campus/location level by reviewing data, sharing priorities identified by the Student Success Team, identifying existing practices that impact the goal, identifying existing policies/procedures that affect the data and that impede making progress in addressing the goal, and capturing feedback. She also asked each team to create a schedule and plan for their campus forums.

Teresa closed the meeting with reminders about everyone’s assignments for PD day on Oct

19 th . She also mentioned that the next meeting will NOW be Nov. 2 nd from 3:30 – 5 pm in the

Confluence room on the Meramec campus. She stated that the rest of the meetings for the fall semester as well as for the spring semester were listed on the agenda. a.
