FORT SCOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE Minutes of the Board of Trustees Meeting November 16, 2015 PRESENT: John Bartelsmeyer, Bernita Hill, Dana McKenney, Liz Meyer, and Robert Nelson ALSO PRESENT: Alysia Johnston – President, Juley McDaniel – Board Clerk, faculty, staff, students, members of the press, and members of the public. John Bartelsmeyer called the meeting to order at 5:34 pm. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. MEATS TEAM RECOGNITION: Jenilee Martin, FSCC Meats Team Coach introduced the team members. The group participates in six contests throughout the year, viewing ten placings classes at each contest. They judge using USDA standards, muscle, and trimness of the product. The team has been very successful this year including being the first place team at the Denver Livestock Show and American Royal, and being the National Champion runner-up. The repeated success of the team is a great recruiting tool, and participation on the team teaches great work ethic according to Martin. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC: CONSENT AGENDA: A motion was made by Hill, seconded by Nelson, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the Consent Agenda. ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS: A. A motion was made by Nelson, seconded by Meyer, and carried by unanimous vote to approve disposal of a 1993 International truck from the trucking department. B. A motion was made by Nelson, seconded by Hill, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the purchase of an EMC SAN system from Alexander Open Systems at a price of $27,340. C. A motion was made by Meyer, seconded by Hill, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the game management payments for men’s and women’s basketball. D. A motion was made by Hill, seconded by Meyer, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the memorandum of understanding with Greenbush regarding online courses through Greenbush Virtual Partnerships and Greenbush Online. REPORTS FISAP REPORT: Mrs. Johnston reviewed the FISAP report as prepared by Lillie Grubb. FINANCIAL AID IMPACT REPORT: Mrs. Johnston reviewed the report as prepared by Mindy Russell. FISCAL PROGRAM REVIEW: Julie Eichenberger reviewed the Fiscal Program Report. ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATES: Administrators provided the following updates: Julie Eichenberger, Dean of Finance and Operations FSCC’s official audit report will be available after a KPERS calculation is provided from each college. Arnold Arena roof specs are complete in preparation for RFP publication. The Fire Marshall was on campus last week. Some quick fixes have been implemented to the Fire Marshall’s satisfaction. A water leak was identified and fixed on the north side of the Dick Hedges Administration Building. Regena Lance, Dean of Instruction Careers in Construction hosted the most students ever with 581 in attendance. Consideration is being given to conducting a similar event for high school sophomores. Fall CTE advisory meetings are wrapping up. The advisory meetings are a required element for any program that is Perkins eligible. Six welding simulators have been purchased with Perkins funds. Walls are being installed to facilitate the HVAC program at the CTEC building. The first online instructor training was completed with 21 of 23 passing. A second course has started with 26 students. The course will continue to be offered to ensure consistency and high quality of online courses. The spring schedule is open for enrollment. The visit from Higher Learning Commission is in 103 days. A student survey was emailed on November 9, and remains open for them to access through November 18. Opportunity for public comment has also been posted in the paper. Assessment, Strategic Planning, and Program Review are three critical areas for HLC. In the recent CAAP tests, 75% scored at or above the national average. Charles McKown, Dean of Institutional Research and Technology The first submission for SB155course money has gone in. We budgeted down at $150,000, but actually submitted for $300,000. Robert Goltra, Dean of Students TRiO has started recruiting for students. An event this morning brought in 170 applicants. Senior day welcomed 70 more students than last year. Enrollment is open for spring. Dorm occupancy is at 90%. Alysia Johnston The Gordon Parks Celebration was great. Thank you to all who attended and worked to make it happen. The Ryan White benefit rodeo raised $26,000 to help Ryan White’s family with medical bills. FSCC’s welding program has achieved the honor of being named to the M List. Miami County Campus held a dedication ceremony in honor of Bob Hagberg, FSCC’s late Allied Health Instructor. The Endowment Dinner was great. Thank you to Bernita for speaking to the group about being a donor. Department of Education has provided the final certification required for the Licensed Mental Health Technician Program. Jason Hogue’s last day with FSCC will be November 31, 2015. Good luck to him at Peru State College. The Board is welcome to meet at the CTEC building for a future meeting and tour the facility. The board reached consensus to hold the December meeting at the CTEC building. Additionally, the Board decided to move the December meeting to December 14 to facilitate the personal schedules of the members. Robert Nelson reported that he will be attending the KACCT meeting at Allen Community College on December 5 and 6. He will be presenting on FSCC at the meeting.
