Minutes of the Board of Trustees Meeting
September 28, 2015
PRESENT: John Bartelsmeyer, Bernita Hill, Dana McKenney, and Liz Meyer.
ALSO PRESENT: Alysia Johnston – President, Juley McDaniel – Board Clerk, faculty, Zack Reynolds – Board
Attorney, staff, members of the press, and members of the public.
John Bartelsmeyer called the meeting to order at 5:40 pm. The meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance,
and Jason Hogue gave the invocation.
COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR: There were no comments from the chair.
COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC: There were no comments from the public.
CONSENT AGENDA: A motion was made by Meyer, seconded by Hill, and carried by unanimous vote to
approve the Consent Agenda.
ACTION/DISCUSSION ITEMS:
A. A motion was made by Hill, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the Alysia
Johnston as the Bourbon County Economic Development Council (BEDCO) Representative.
B. There being further developments regarding a virtual dual credit partnership with Greenbush, consideration
of the published contract was tabled.
C. A motion was made by Hill, seconded by Meyer, and carried by unanimous vote to approve National
Education Services as the new vendor for default management.
D. A motion was made by Meyer, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to approve the Ellis
Family Fine Arts Center refinance details as provided and presented by John Haas of Ranson Financial.
ITEMS FOR REVIEW:
A. LETTERS OF APPRECIATION: Letters of appreciation and correspondence were reviewed.
REPORTS:
A. PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Mrs. Johnston began by inviting the board to the strategic planning in-service
meetings on October 15. She also updated the board on the following items:
FSCC has been named #1 by Smart Asset. A celebration will be held on October 14.
The coffee shop in Bailey Hall will open on 10/5/15. It will be run by Great Western Dining.
Volleyball is 16-5 and ranked #18 in the nation.
Dill Adolf of the FSCC Rodeo Team was the winning bull rider at the Colby rodeo.
FSCC livestock took first overall at Manhattan and also did well in Omaha.
Greenbush is providing FSCC with 80 free computers to be used by students.
Financial Aid disbursement will be on October 9. FSCC will distribute about $1 million.
The weekend of October 24 will be the Gordon Parks Celebration, Homecoming, and the Dan
VandeWynkel Alumni Rodeo.
Bailey Lyons reported that the Endowment Dinner will be on November 5 at 6:00 pm in the Ellis Family
Fine Arts Center.
Jason Hogue shared that FSCC Alum LaVonte David was on the cover of Sports Illustrated.
Robert Goltra stated that Manufacturing Day will be held on October 2.
Charles McKown and Regena Lance provided insight from their attendance at a recent conference for the
Council of North Central Two Year Colleges.
Regena Lance announced that Math Relays will be held on October 15, and CAAP tests will also be given
that day.
Santos Manrique shared that Careers in Construction will have around 550 students present.
Julie Eichenberger stated that we are considering requests for proposals for the roof of Arnold Arena.
There was board consensus to move forward with that process.
Liz Meyer reported on her attendance at the Kansas Association of Community College Trustees meeting.
She highlighted a presentation that focused on students knowing that the institution cares about them and
their success.
EXECUTIVE SESSION: There was a motion made by Meyer, seconded by Hill, and unanimous vote to adjourn
to executive session at 7:15 p.m. for 10 minutes for the purpose of discussing acquisition of real property with no
action expected to follow.
OPEN SESSION: A motion was made by Hill, seconded by McKenney, and carried by unanimous vote to return
to regular session at 7:25 p.m.
ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business to come before the Trustees, a motion to adjourn was made at
7:26 p.m. by McKenney, seconded by Meyer, and carried by unanimous vote.
