Chabot College September, 1992 Course Outline for Physical Education 2 TENNIS - TOURNAMENT Catalog Description: PHED 2TNT – Tennis - Tournament 1 unit Prerequisites: A student must possess a fundamental knowledge of the game, and must also be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following strokes: 1. Forehand 2. Backhand 3. Serve 4. Lob 5. Volley The class will meet 3 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: A student must possess a fundamental knowledge of the game, and must also be able to demonstrate proficiency in the following strokes: 1. Forehand 2. Backhand 3. Serve 4. Lob 5. Volley Expected Outcomes for the Students: This course is designed to provide the student of advanced ability an opportunity to review and practice the various skills relative to the game of tennis in a structured situation with students of similar ability. The activity is designed, in general, to incorporate at the advanced level the various aspects of physical fitness, acceptable social conduct, interest in a recreational activity and further development of neuromuscular skills. Course Content: 1. Review and practice of the elementary and intermediate skills such as: a. Forehand b. Backhand c. Serve d. Lob e. Volley These skills will be explained, demonstrated and practiced on an advanced level, emphasizing factors such as placement, etc. 1 Chabot College Tennis - Tournament - PHED 2TNT, Page 2 Explanation, demonstration and practice of the following skills: a. Forehand and Backhand b. Serve c. Volley d. Conditioning for Tennis Competition 3. Explanation, demonstration and practice of advanced team strategy relative to: a. Singles b. Doubles Methods of Presentation: The materials for the course are presented by the lecture-demonstration method. Instruction will be given through the use of large groups, small groups, and on an individual basis. Student practice will follow the same procedures. Student discussions will be used to review course content. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: Each student will be evaluated on a tripartite basis. This will include the demonstration of specific skills relative to the course. A demonstration of oral or written expression on specific materials relative to the course; plus a demonstration of satisfactory attendance for the duration of the course. Students will be evaluated in terms of the expected proficiency required of advanced tennis at the junior college level.
