Chabot College December, 1979 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 ELEMENTARY JUDO Catalog Description: PHED 2JU – Elementary Judo 1 unit Student should have a background in one of the following activities: tumbling, wrestling, gymnastics or previous judo experience. The class will meet 3 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: Student should have a background in one of the following activities: tumbling, wrestling, gymnastics or previous judo experience. Expected Outcomes for the Students: This course is designed to acquaint the beginning student with the history and elementary arts of judo. It specifically aims at improving physical development (Renshindo) and mental development (Shushindo). The course is intended to stimulate interest in the sport of judo as a leisure time activity. It promotes many aspects of physical fitness, neuromuscular development and mental discipline. Course Content: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ukemi - (Falls) Ogoshi - (Major hip throw) Uki Ogoshi - (Floating hip throw) Har Goshi - (Sweeping loin throw) Hane Goshi - (Springing hip throw) 6. Hiza Guruma - (Knee wheel throw) 7. Tomoenage - (Somersault or stomach throw) Methods of Presentation: The material for this course will be presented through verbal explanation, demonstrations, class drills and individual correction and practice. Maximum time will be allotted to student practice. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: Each student will be evaluated in terms of the expected proficiency in elementary judo. Each one must demonstrate sufficient mastery of the specific skills covered in the course. Each must show satisfactory attendance throughout the duration of the course.
