LEARNING SKILLS: READING
Catalog Description:
English 117 - Learning Skills: Reading
(May be repeated 1 time)
4 units
Reading to develop decoding, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Use of specialized techniques
developed especially for students with learning disabilities. Includes reading comprehension strategies
and vocabulary development, and other compensatory strategies. Designed for students with learning
disabilities. Recommendation of instructor advisable. Strongly recommended: English 116. 4 hours.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. recognize and pronounce new and familiar words using a multisensory approach;
2. demonstrate improvement in reading vocabulary based on standarized tests;
3. demonstrate improvement in reading comprehension based on standarized tests;
4. spell with increased accuracy;
5. write a simple summary;
6. articulate and demonstrate which reading and compensatory strategies work for them.
Course Content:
1. The Lindamood Auditory Discrimination in Depth program or the Slingerland multisensory
approach for pronouncing and spelling words
2. The Lindamood Visualization/Verbalization program for reading comprehension
3. Intensive vocabulary development
4. Reading and summarizing short essays
5. Reading comprehension strategies such as SQ3R
