Chabot College September 1994 Course Outline for Chinese 50B CONVERSATIONAL CHINESE Catalog Description: 50B - Conversational Chinese 2 units Development of skills learned in Chinese 50A. Understanding of spoken Chinese through pronunciation, vocabulary, and applied grammar. Introduction to everyday life of Chinese-speaking people and the skills needed to successfully function in the culture. Prerequisite: Chinese 50A completed with a grade of "C" or better. 3 hours. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. have become proficient in using the conversational structures and vocabulary presented; 2. have further developed an understanding and appreciation of the culture of Chinese-speaking people. Course Content: 1. Review and "recycling" of content of 50A. 2. Functional vocabulary and grammar to allow students to: a. extend, accept or refuse invitations b. gather information with a wide variety of interrogative strategies c. use culturally authentic maps and timetables d. make purchases e. describe simple physical ailments to pharmacists and doctors f. narrate simple events in past, present, and future g. make physical descriptions of people and things 3. Selective survey of major cultural and artistic achievements of Chinese-speaking areas. Methods of Presentation: 1. 2. 3. 4.
