Chabot College/Las Positas College October 1993 Course Outline for Art 11 DESIGN, MATERIALS, AND COLOR Catalog Description: 11 - Design, Materials, and Color 3 units Color theory as it applies to two and three dimensional design. 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should: 1. develop a sense of respect for each product no matter how simple or brief the experiment. Disciplined control and craftsmanship is required; 2. acquire competence in handling various media and related techniques along with an ability to discuss the objectives using proper terminology; 3. develop imagination through the manipulation of plastic and formal elements of design; 4. know and understand color theory vocabulary and principles. Course Content: 1. Spectrum assignment and value scale with a hue (tints, tones, shades) 2. Independent use of hue, value, and intensity 3. Uses of color contrasts of hue, value, cool and warm, complementary, simultaneous contrast, intensity, and extension. 4. Emphasizing and de-emphasizing actual three-dimensional forms with color 5. Expression of emotion through color 6. To discover various ways to make harmonious and disharmonious compositions 7. To discover the elements of your own style 8. To learn techniques of painting as well as techniques for checking and evaluating your own art works 9. Color theories 10. Maquette for site specific environmental sculpture. Methods of Presentation: 1. Formal lectures 2. Individual criticism 3. Technical assistance 4. Slides and related visual aids Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: 1. Development of craftsmanship 2. Degree of understanding of the theory or concepts presented 3.
