ARTS AND CRAFT MOVEMENT
International design movement(1860-1910) influenced till the 30s
Led by William Morris(textile designer,a rtist, writer, illustrator)inspired by the writing of John Ruskin, who
analyzed the relationship between art, society and labour
Based on simple forms- nature as a source of patterns, truth to materials, craft productiomn, simple in form,
revived old techniques, bold forms and strong colors, medieval design(medieval period was an ideal example
of the relationship between production and creative craftsmanship
Concerned about the loss of traditional skills and creativity(charachterised the development of industry)
Reaction against the poord quality and fastly produced design during industrial revolution(no skill necessary,
poor quality goods and designs produced in mass production by machines which are soullessness)
Objects should be useful but beautiful
The goal was to create design that was for the people by the people, a source of pleasure to the maker and the
user
This was a way to produce beautiful object and providing employment for craftsmen
-Walter crane: book illustrator, children stories(his goal was to bring art into the daily lide of all classes)

Many women were active:

wrongly attributed to her father, she founded the Women’s Guild of Arts because women weren’t allowed to
join the Art Worklers’ Guild
What is the difference between the aesthetic movement and the arts and crafts movement?
The aesthetic movement emphasized beauty, art and sensory experience, it rejected moral and social
messages of victorian age and art and focused on the aesthetic qualities of art and design(mostly decorative
art also interest in exotic cultures) art’s for art’s sake(no moral or political agenda)
The arts and crafts movement was broader, it also criticized the dehumanizing effect of the industrial
revolution, made to promote the importance of traditional craftsmanship, manual labour and the handmade
The aesthetic movement was more concerned with the sensory experience of art, while the arts and crafts
movement emphasized the importance of the handmade and traditional craftsmanship
