Chabot College Academic Policy Council Comments to Academic Policy Council Please send this form electronically or physically to Ming Ho, APC Chair, at mho@chabotcollege.edu. APC meets every 3rd Thursday of the month, but also meets on 1st Thursday as needed. Check the committee website for meeting dates. Meetings are 2:45–4:00 PM in Room 2345. Name (Optional): ____________________________________ Date: _____________ Issue of Concern: Students have forged their priority number in order to get into classes. Comments and Suggestions: I believe this falls under the category of falsification of applications/records, etc. and is therefore punishable by the means that is listed on p. 61 in the 2010-2012 College Catalog (Item #2 in the left column). I am hoping that we can find a response to priority number fraud that is less severe than expulsion. Status: The 2010-2012 Catalog lists on p. 61 as a disciplinable conduct, “2. Forgery, alteration or misuse of college documents, records, or identification or knowingly furnished false information to a college representative in connection with the performance of official duties.” Under this clause, the consensus of the APC is that faculty members can initiate reasonable disciplinary to correct student’s fraudulence, such as dropping the student from the course (which is equivalent to giving student a zero cheating on an exam). The instructor is encouraged to report incidents to the VP of Student Services after obtaining evidence of fraudulent conduct. Faculty members may keep track of the authorization numbers given to students, so if a student uses another student’s number, the instructor can find out by checking Class-Web. Since many classrooms have Internet access, the instructor may also use it to handle enrollment issues like checking priority number, etc., to reduce fraud.
