This policy addresses expectations for faculty maintenance of qualification by scholarly and
professional activity. This policy is in accordance with standards the COB must meet for AACSB
accreditation. The information provided below provides a basis by which (1) all COB faculty (graduate
and undergraduate; permanent and temporary) are categorized in terms of their qualifications and
engagement; and (2) the currency of their qualifications is reviewed.
CLASSIFICATION OF FACULTY
Initial determination of “qualified” faculty status is based on two dimensions: (1) initial academic
preparation; and (2) sustained academic and professional engagement. The Dean, in consultation with
the faculty member, will assign each COB faculty member to one of the following categories based on
these dimensions:
Scholarly Academics
possess a doctoral or terminal degree; and
engage in academic research and related scholarly activities
Practice Academics
possess a doctoral or terminal degree; and engage in
applied/practice activities
Scholarly Practitioners
possess a master’s degree and have substantial professional
experience; and engage in academic research and related scholarly
activities
Instructional Practitioners
possess a master’s degree and have substantial professional
experience; and engage in applied/practice activities
Other
Do not meet criteria for any of these categories

ONGOING MAINTENANCE OF FACULTY QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements to maintain qualified faculty status in each category are as described below:
SCHOLARLY ACADEMIC (SA)
To hold SA status, a faculty member must use Method A or Method B as follows:
METHOD A: Fulfill each of the following:
(1) Hold a doctoral or terminal degree from an accredited academic institution
(2) Within the five-year cycle, authorship in at least two published articles in
peer- refereed journals having an acceptance rate of less than 60%
(3) Earn ten points during the five-year cycle from items on the Faculty Activities List,
including points for articles used to complete (2) above.
METHOD B: Faculty awarded doctoral or terminal degrees from an accredited academic
institution fulfill Method B for 5 calendar years from the date their degree is conferred or date
of employment in the current position by the College of Business, whichever occurred first.
PRACTICE ACADEMIC (PA)
 A faculty member must hold a doctoral or terminal degree from an accredited
academic institution and earn ten points from the Faculty Activities List during
a five-year cycle.
 The faculty member’s activities must include authorship in at least one article
published in a refereed journal.
 The faculty member must earn a minimum of four points from listed activities
designated as Professional. The remainder of the points may come from any listed
activity.
SCHOLARLY PRACTITIONER (SP)
 A faculty member must have at least a Master’s degree from an accredited academic
institution and earn four points from the Faculty Activities List during a five-year cycle.
 The faculty member’s activities must include at least one two-point activity designated
as Scholarly. The remainder of the points may come from any listed activity.
INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTITIONER (IP)
 A faculty member must have at least a Master’s degree from an accredited academic
institution and earn three points from the Faculty Activities List during a five-year cycle.
 The faculty member must earn a minimum of two points from listed activities
designated as Professional. The remaining point may come from any listed activity
OTHER: A faculty member who does not meet the requirements for the SA, PA, SP, or IP
categories as described above during a five-year cycle shall hold OTHER status.
The Faculty Activities List below shows those activities assigned points toward maintaining the
qualification of a faculty member. Some listed activities may by nature be components of other listed
activities, e.g. a conference proceeding implies a conference presentation which may in turn imply a
conference attendance. In such cases, faculty will accrue the points assigned to the single highest
order activity and not will not accrue points for component activities. Faculty performing activities
jointly with others, such as co-authors, will each accrue only the full value of points for the single
highest order activity performed.
