FACULTY PROFILE Dr. Geyfman Uses Cases and Competitions to Teach Finance Academics are often criticized for being too scholarly, but Dr. Victoria Geyfman says that in her 10th year at BU she now finds herself more involved in teaching and mentoring students on business cases and working on research based on real business decisions. This fall, her students in a Commercial Bank Management course participated in a case competition sponsored by the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, in which student teams across the nation partner with community banks to conduct a case study evaluating the institutions’ financial performance and assess their effect on local communities. Both participating banks were represented by BU alumni — Taylor Farr ’13 and Rich Kashnoski ’05. Outside the classroom, Geyfman coached teams of Finance students in the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Investment Research Challenge. CFA IRC is a competition between university teams that research a designated publicly traded company, write a comprehensive report, and, if selected, present their findings to a panel of judges from the industry. This year, BU’s team took third place in the regional competition in Philadelphia. The team’s industry mentor, Matt Hoch ’08 of Vanguard, played an instrumental role in the team’s success. Additionally, Dr. Geyfman is collaborating with Dr. Christian Grandzol and Bob Moore ’80 to write a decision case analysis based on Moore’s experience acquiring an oil refinery. The case simulates decisions under uncertainty and influence of a myriad of critical business decisions. ® College of Business Bloomsburg University 400 East Second St. Bloomsburg, PA 17815 (570) 389-4745 bloomu.edu/cob Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania College of Business Newsletter —November 2015 STUDENTS ON THE MOVE Veronica Krolikowski Veronica Krolikowski, a management major, was named this year’s top business graduate with a 4.0 GPA. While growing up, she enjoyed visiting quaint, small towns with her family’s concession business and exploring the cuisine and lifestyle of places abroad. As a teenager, Veronica was exposed to travel, lodging, and marketing as a vocational area, which provided real-world work experience in the restaurant and lodging industries. Soon after beginning her studies at BU, Veronica decided to someday open a tearoom restaurant called TeawithV. In the meantime, she periodically updates her blog www. TeawithV.com with simply perfect recipes, home décor, gardening tips, and beauty ideas. Veronica also participates in Bloomsburg’s Society for the Advancement of Management. To gain inspiration from traveling and save up capital to open the tea room, Veronica plans to work as a flight attendant after graduation.
