Integrated Theatre Studies Emphasis
Majoring in Theatre Arts at Bloomsburg University
Why choose an Integrated Theatre Studies Emphasis?
Integrated Theatre Studies enables you to pursue a broad course of studies in each area of
production. This option is especially appropriate for students if you wish to pursue a career in
stage or theatre management, educational theatre, or theatre for youth. This curriculum offers
courses which require theoretical and practical experience in all areas of theatre.
Did you ever wonder how The Producers got on the Broadway stage? Well, one of the folks
who helped get it there is a Bloomsburg University Theatre graduate – with an Integrated Studies
Emphasis. Some of our graduates are acting in high-profile places like Broadway, and Los
Angeles. Others are working throughout the country, in large companies and small. Many of
them are stage managers and production mangers. Some are teaching. And some have pursued
other lines of work. An integrated theatre studies emphasis at Bloomsburg University prepares
you for a wide variety of options.
Production is an integral part of all B.U. theatre arts major programs. As a person with
broad theatrical interests, you’ll likely want to spread out your production participation,
combining acting with backstage and front-of-house experiences. Bloomsburg is an ideal place
to do that. Our personal approach allows us to work with you to tailor your assignments to your
needs. Many integrated studies students will focus on stage management in their production
assignments, while others will be more exploratory. Shows are presented in the Alvina Krause
Theatre, a 350-seat venue located in downtown Bloomsburg that is often full for our
performances.
We have an ongoing collaborative relationship with the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble,
which also performs in, and in fact owns, the Alvina Krause Theatre. That relationship goes way
beyond sharing space. We regularly jointly produce plays, which places student actors on stage
and in rehearsal with full time professional actors. Members of the Ensemble frequently teach
classes to our students, and every production has a large contingent of Ensemble members in the
audience. You’ll get to know them, and they’ll get to know you. Our internship program, in
cooperation with BTE, is available for concentrated work in various areas of specialization.
As a theatre arts major, the faculty is dedicated to your total development as a theatre artist.
You’ll participate in a broad range of production and performance activities: acting, directing,
costumes, scenery, lights, etc. The faculty believes strongly that such activity adds greatly to
what you have to offer to the theatre. All theatre arts majors engage in a core curriculum that
introduces and investigates theories and history of theatre and dramatic literature providing a
solid background for advanced studies in the your area of emphasis. It also provides a vehicle for
planning and assessing your progress as an artist.
