Funding Source: ☐ General ☐ Categorical ☐ Grant Grant name: % % % Justification: Why is this position necessary? The STEM Center is developing into a multi-functional resource Center for students in the Science and Mathematics Division. We are in need of a point person who will be responsible for organizing formal study groups by course, supporting outreach and in-reach to increase student utilization of the Center, organizing speakers, workshops and other activities including working with our STEM Peer Advisors and Student Clubs, maintaining websites that clarify pathways in STEM, and collaborating with instructional and counseling faculty who are developing pathways on campus. Further, the Math sequence presents a barrier to completion across campus, significantly effecting all Pathways and interactions with our feeder schools. A director position is necessary given the number of students who What educational programs or institutional purposes does this position support? How does the request interact with Math and Science, almost all, the level of collaboration with faculty and administration, relate specifically to your Program Review, the College’s Strategic Plan, and/or Accreditation Recommendations? and supervisory responsibilities. This position would support the development of our STEM Program, Health and Wellness Pathways and also our basic skill math courses. This position is critical for the further development of clarified pathways for students who pass through the science and math division. It should be noted that front desk assistance with checking in, scheduling appointments and study groups, checking out equipment and answering questions differs tremendously from higher functions needed to collaborate and process paperwork. More than one position is necessary if we are to move the dial on Math and Science completion rates and pathway development. Where will the individual work? To whom will the person report? Are there any special equipment/facilities needs to be considered? The individual will work in the STEM Center and will report to Dean of Science and Math. There are no special equipment/facilities that need to be considered. What is the consequence of not funding this position? Without this position, students will not receive supports that could increase their success in achieving their educational goals. What alternative approaches have been considered in meeting the programmatic demands of this request? The STEM Center has been functioning with minimal staff and there is no other alternative to improving its function and student success without providing adequate staffing for the Center. How will the campus community (students, staff, faculty, and community) be positively impacted by filling this position? Students will have additional services available in tutoring options, workshops and exposure to career options. The STEM Center could become a showpiece for the college and a resource that would attract students who are interested in either STEM or Pre-Allied Health Pathways to attend Chabot. What other personnel currently provide support to this program and these students? At this time, the Center is staffed with only a 0.5 time Instructional Assistant and hourly faculty to help with tutoring. There is no official staff member present on a daily basis to oversee the function of the center and this has lead to significant challenges and inability to meet the needs of students across campus.
