Chapter 4 Troubleshooting Answers 1. The most likely cause is electromagnetic interference (EMI). EMI is interference that emanates from an electrical device. Since the fluorescent light is an electrical device with a strong magnetic field, that magnetic field is probably disrupting network communications on the wires that are lying across it. 2. When connecting two network devices together, such as two hubs or two computers containing network interface cards, a crossover configuration must be used. In order to make a crossover cable, you must change the pin-out connections on one end of the cable. Note that this change must be made on only one end; otherwise you have essentially made a regular data cable that has a nonstandard pin connection.
