Form ProjStat (Rev. 5/2013) (RTI) Research Project Statement 17-139 FY 2017 Annual Program Title: Synthesis of Integral/Semi-integral Abutments and Implementation to Bridges (Deliverable Based) Project Constraints: 1. Project length not to exceed 12 months. 2. Project budget not to exceed $60,000. The Problem: Bridge deck joints and bearings are exposed to continual wear and heavy impact from vehicles, temperature, creep, shrinkage and chemicals. Since they are costly to install, maintain and repair, over 40 states have developed jointless bridges with integral/semi-integral abutments system, where possible. It has been proved that the integral/semi-integral system can perform well without continuous maintenance. In Texas, the fist integral abutment bridge was built in the 1990's. It should be investigated to determine if the integral/semi-integral system can be applicable to Texas soils and substructure types. Technical Objectives: Perform a synthesis of existing data to investigate whether the integral/semi-integral system can be applicable to Texas soils and substructure types. Desired Deliverables: 1. Value of Research (VoR) that includes both qualitative and economic benefits. 2. Project report that includes: a. Current and historic usage. b. Advantages and disadvantages. c. Applicability to soil types in Texas. d. Applicability to common substructure types in Texas. e. Cost comparison. f. Development of design concepts and details. Proposal Requirements: 1. Utilize the deliverable based templates (see the appendices provided or in the University Handbook). 2. Proposals will be considered non-responsive and will not be accepted for technical evaluation if they are not received by the deadline or do not meet the requirements stated in RTI’s University Handbook. 3. Proposals should be submitted in PDF format, 1 PDF file per proposal. File name should include project name and university abbreviation.
