Upcoming Observations
•
Last planned STIS SMOV visits (other than NUV darks) execute
Sunday and Monday
–
11395 MAMA Image Stability



•
•
08-23 15:16:00 - 08-23 18:33:03
08-24 13:05:00 - 08-24 16:19:00
Internal Lamp exposures only
These will complete the planned STIS SMOV observations.
However, some caveats about STIS bench and image stability remain

STIS Stability
•
The low E140H exposure seen in 11403 suggests that large breathing may
be causing larger than expected throughput changes
– Comparison of internal lamp exposures suggests relative throughput of
E140H and E140M unchanged


–
Next standard star observation using E140H not scheduled until
November. May ask to bring this 2 orbit Cycle 17 CAL/STIS visit forward
if LRP allows.

•
Comparing 2002 & 2010 E140H & E140M deep wavecals show that in the
FUV the LINE lamp has declined by about 20%, but no difference between
gratings
Since E140M external observation shows the expected throughput, this
supports hypothesis that low E140H flux was due to large breathing excursion
May move E140H exposure to middle of orbit to minimize breathing
Test for relative stability of aperture plane with sky (11389) had been done
with MAMAs off, so bench heaters kept instrument unusually stable
– Will evaluate bench thermal response to this weekend’s test
(11395)before deciding whether to ask for 11389 to be repeated with
MAMAs on (2 orbits)
