SMOV Status & Planning Meeting Notes
7/28/09
-
Summary:
-
Observatory Status
WFC3 has completed 72% of the planned SMOV4 visits; the science
results are mostly nominal or better. (UVIS dark current is worse than expected.) COS has
detected two FUV problems and has proposed near-term workarounds, one of which requires
an intercept load this week. STIS MAMA operations resume today. The NICMOS Cooling
System (NCS) was successfully restarted this morning. A new ERO proposal has been
generated to replace the target whose visits failed last week due to guidestar issues.

SI Status

WFC3
 Science (SDuestua)
 WFC3 has completed 72% of the planned SMOV4 visits
o Science results are mostly nominal or better than
expectations
 UVIS dark current is higher than expected
o Engineering results are nominal except for a focus motion
anomaly
o Much analysis is ongoing
o For details, see the attached
WFC3_SMOV_Summary_28July09-1
 Team has requested manual scheduling of bright earth crossings
during 6 IR Dark exposures in 11447
o Two can be scheduled in SMS215
 After overriding the links
o Other visits may require proposal updates
 UV Contamination Check (11426) POSTARGs
o POSTARGS are no longer needed once SIAF update is in
place in the SMS215
o It was decided against removing the POSTARGs for the 215
occurrance of this monitor.
 For subsequent weeks, the POSTARGs will be
removed from the proposal
 Cycle 17 Contam monitor picks up afterward
o
COS


 FUV External Wavecals (11487)
o Experienced a local-rate-check (LRC) anomaly on Mon.
morning
 Understood to be detection of the zeroth order on the
detector
 To be mitigated by restricting usage of FP-POS = 4
 Requires removal of FP-POS = 4 from
11487
o Also requires intercept load

o
New ERO has been proposed to replace failed visits of 11502.
 Proposal underwent PIT review yesterday.
FGS/OTA
 Nominal
 The guide star acquisition failures (HSTARs 11948, 11950, and 11951) that
occurred over the weekend were all due to the same dim star that caused the
failure documented in HSTAR 11944.

FUV Segment B Detector Features: the “Divots”
o Possible mis-registration of charge for high-gain events;
detailed analysis ongoing by IDT
o Proposal to mitigate by reducing to ~ 150V
 Test in SMS215 with patchable constant update
 The revert back to normal voltage for
subsequent visits in the week.
 Permanent change, if necessary, in
SMS222.
