FAITH FORUM A Heritage Shared: What Chestnut Hill Has in Common with Baghdad The Jesuit Presence in New England, Jordan and Iraq A Conversation with Fr. Michael Linden, S.J. New England Province Assistant for International, Pastoral and Social Ministries Sunday, May 4th - Lower Church Friary Room - 11:15 to 12:30 The relationship between the New England Jesuits, who staff our own parish, and the people of Iraq began more than 75 years ago, with the establishment of a secondary school, and later a college, in Baghdad. Despite their expulsion when schools were nationalized in the 1960's, and despite the current war, the Jesuits have maintained their relationship with the people of Iraq through ongoing ministries serving Chaldean seminarians, Christian minorities and Iraqi refugees in Amman, Jordan and elsewhere in the Middle East. Want to find out more about the conditions and needs of millions of Iraqis displaced by war and religious persecution? Want to understand how the New England Jesuits are responding to the urgent needs for education, humanitarian relief, refugee resettlement and inter-religious dialogue in the Middle East? Wondering how we in New England might participate in and support those efforts? Join members of the St. Ignatius ARRUPE group (Assisting Refugees Using Parish Energies) for a faith forum on the challenges and opportunities for building solidarity with the displaced people of Iraq and those serving them in Jesuit-sponsored missions in the Middle East. THE CATHOLIC APPEAL – Handing on the Light of Christ – We still have $50,500 to raise before we reach our parish goal of $85,500. Thank you to the 102 families that have already contributed. If you have not yet given, please consider a gift today and help us meet our goal. Our parish will receive 25% of all funds we raise above our goal. So each gift has the potential to increase parish revenue while still supporting the ministries funded by the 2008 Catholic Appeal. The Appeal is to the Archdiocese what the weekly offertory is to our parish. You can pick up information with pledge forms in the Gathering Space of the church, or for more information, please visit www.bostoncatholicappeal.com or call 617-779-3700. Every gift matters. Thank you. AN EVENING OF SCRIPTURE REFLECTION - Join members of the Liturgy Commission for an evening of scripture reflection on Tuesday, May 6th at 7:15 pm in the Friary Room. We will be reflecting on the scriptures for the upcoming weeks, including Pentecost. Please RSVP to Amy Doherty at aldoherty@verizon.net or 617-964-6272. BOOK DISCUSSION – The Camel Knows the Way by Norna Kelly will be discussed in the rectory living room at 11:15 pm on June 1st. Here are two excerpts from reviewers of the book on amazon.com: “ I was very touched by this true story of an intelligent person struggling to come to terms with her past, her family, grief, alcoholism, the material world and all the ills of everyday life”. Another said: “The author presents a unique portrait of Mother Teresa. This is probably the only book where Mother Teresa is portrayed in such a profoundly human, relational way. Our book group, comprised of (readers) in age from late 30s to 70s, gave this book unanimous approval. All of us enjoyed the book, all for various reasons”. Please feel free to attend the discussion on June 1st.
