Our usual fall discussion group is now forming. We will meet, as usual, at the Jesuit residence, 130

Beacon Street, at 7:30 PM for four Wednesday evenings starting October 23

13 th . We will end by 9:00 PM each evening. rd and ending on November

Frs. Bob and J.A. will host the meetings. This year we are proposing a full year’s plan focusing on the person of Jesus. We will start in October reading Anne Rice’s fictional account called Christ the Lord: The

Road to Cana (N.Y. : Alfred Knopf, 2008). This is a novel that provides a fascinating glimpse of what family life might have been like for the young Jesus of Nazareth. It ends with Jesus rejecting the disciples’ pleas that he become the military revolutionary Messiah for which many had hoped.

Both books should be available through local bookstores and at Amazon.com.

Space is limited. To reserve a space please contact Betty in the office ( ignatius@bc.edu

No, Pope Francis is not paying a visit to St Ignatius, but we are hoping to facilitate some conversations on subjects generated by his recent interviews. Dr. Rick

Gaillardetz, parishioner, member of the BC theology department and frequent contributor to America Magazine and the National Catholic Reporter, will offer some initial reflections and then we'll go from there. If you have not yet read the interview and responses published in America, we will have copies available at the rectory. Please let us know if you would like to have one or you can go online to americamagazine.org to read the interview.

ROGRAM

The Archdiocese of Boston requires all volunteers (in whatever capacity) to complete a training program in child abuse protection. If you are thinking of becoming a volunteer in any of our ministries (lector, coordinator of liturgy, choir member, etc.), or if you are already a new volunteer in any ministry, you must be able to verify your attendance at a Protecting God’s Children (PGC) program. If you have completed this program in another location, you should have a certificate of attendance given you at that time. We need a copy of that certificate. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the appropriate supervisor of your ministry.

The next program will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 2:30 – 5:00 PM in the Choir/Media room in the Lower Church.

If you plan to attend this session, please contact Mary Blackburn (617-552-6039) or Betty McLaughlin (617-552-

6102 / ignatius@bc.edu) as soon as possible. Space is always limited.

Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe and secure atmosphere for all the children at St. Ignatius parish.

La Página Hispana

Querido Parroquianos,

New England .

CTOBER

20 TH .

Ismael Moreno Coto, a Jesuit priest popularly known as Padre Melo, is the director of Radio Progreso, a

Christian-based radio station that is a national leader in investigative reporting. Radio Progreso was shut down by the new government at the time of the coup in 2009 and has suffered military occupations since.

He is also director of the Center for Reflection, Research, and Communication (ERIC-SJ, the Spanish acronym), a think tank that conducts research and education and reports on societal trends and public opinion in Honduras.

Padre Melo will speak of human rights abuses occurring throughout Honduran society, and especially within his own journalistic world, as well as within campesino and indigenous communities. He will offer an in-depth analysis into the systemic reasons for the continuing violence, impunity, and injustices, illuminate the various impacts of The Drug War, and will highlight steps to rebuild networks of community in Honduras.

Fr. Melo will celebrate the Spanish Mass at Noon in the lower church. He will give a presentation on

Human Rights abuses in Honduras in Spanish and English at 1:30 PM in the Lannon Chapel. All are invited to hear Fr. Melo and learn more about the work of the Society of Jesus in Honduras. Fr. Melo’s visit is sponsored by Witness for Peace New England.
