You will have an opportunity for spiritual conversation, silent prayer and gatherings of prayer and worship with members of the parish community. The retreat will be held Friday, October 25th to Sunday, October 27th . The cost for the weekend is $275 (all inclusive), with a deposit of $100 at registration. If anyone is in need of financial assistance in order to attend, please let us know. Please register through the Parish Office 617-552-6102, or ignatius@bc.edu. FALL DISCUSSION GROUP 2013 Our usual fall discussion group is now forming. We will meet, as usual, at the Jesuit residence, 130 Beacon Street, at 7:30 PM for four Wednesday evenings starting October 23rd and ending on November 13th. We will end by 9:00 PM each evening. Frs. Bob and J.A. will host the meetings. This year we are proposing a full year’s plan focusing on the person of Jesus. We will start in October reading Anne Rice’s fictional account called Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana (N.Y. : Alfred Knopf, 2008). This is a novel that provides a fascinating glimpse of what family life might have been like for the young Jesus of Nazareth. It ends with Jesus rejecting the disciples’ pleas that he become the military revolutionary Messiah for which many had hoped. In the spring, we will take up Reza Aslan’s best-selling new book called Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth (NY: Random House, 2013). This non-fiction work proposes that Jesus was, indeed, a political revolutionary who was executed for treason by the Roman occupying army. He was one of many such zealots in his time. The contrast between the two images of Jesus should prove interesting fodder for discussion and offer an opportunity for each of us to re-assess our own working image of just exactly who Jesus was and is for us today. Both books should be available through local bookstores and at Amazon.com. Space is limited. To reserve a space please contact Betty in the office (ignatius@bc.edu) or 617-5526102) as soon as possible. 1. PROTECTING GOD’S CHILDREN PROGRAM The Archdiocese of Boston requires all volunteers (in whatever capacity) to complete a training program in child abuse protection. If you are thinking of becoming a volunteer in any of our ministries (lector, coordinator of liturgy, choir member, etc.), or if you are already a new volunteer in any ministry, you must be able to verify your attendance at a Protecting God’s Children (PGC) program. If you have completed this program in another location, you should have a certificate of attendance given you at that time. We need a copy of that certificate. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the appropriate supervisor of your ministry. The next program will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2013 from 2:30 – 5:00 PM in the Choir/Media room in the Lower Church. If you plan to attend this session, please contact Mary Blackburn (617-552-6039) or Betty McLaughlin (617-5526102 / ignatius@bc.edu) as soon as possible. Space is always limited. Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe and secure atmosphere for all the children at St. Ignatius parish. Katherine Maher, Chair, Child Abuse Prevention Team SAVE THE DATE - TRANSITIONS WITH OPEN ARMS “COME AND JOURNEY WITH US” Signups at the "Transition" table at our Tent Event (September 21 and 22) and inquiries from previous Transitions participants indicate there is a need for a support group for those who are unemployed. If you are interested in taking part in a group for support with employment issues, you are invited to a meeting on Thursday, October 10th in the Friary Room at 7pm. All are invited. The Transitions’ Leaders are Frank Faggiano and Cathy Shea. On Monday evening, September 30th, from 7:15 – 8:30 pm in the Parish Office, we began an eight-week program on the essentials of the Catholic Faith. This program leads into RCIA for those wishing to become Catholics and Confirmation for those who are Baptized and have received Eucharist. If you are interested and would like more information, contact Fr. Robert VerEecke, S.J. at frvereec@bc.edu or 617552-6110. WANT MORE INSIGHT INTO THE READINGS YOU HEAR AT MASS? Join us for PASTA & PRAYER, a prayerful conversation with friends over dinner to discuss the Sunday scriptures. Feed your body, mind and soul!! The next session, Back To the Future, discussing the Advent season readings, will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2013 in the Dining Room at the Parish Office from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This year, we will also explore the impact of the adoption of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy on our faith lives and how it shapes our understanding of the Scriptures. Prior registration required: Call Catherine at 617-782-5812 or e-mail to cfdesq@hotmail.com, to reserve a place at the table. JAMAICA RETURN! WOMEN'S TABLE FALL WRITER’S WORKSHOP The Women’s Table will be hosting a 6-week Writer’s Workshop this fall. Finding your voice through writing aptly describes this series, which is open to women from all walks of life. Past participants have said, “This has been a unique experience,” or “I am among kindred spirits here; this has been a refuge for me.” The series will meet on six consecutive Thursday mornings, beginning Oct. 17th, 2013 and continuing through Nov. 21st, 2013. Each session will be held at the Sisters of St. Joseph residence, 637 Cambridge St., Brighton, MA. There is no charge for the workshop, however donations are welcome.
