MASS-TERING THE LITURGY ANSWER FROM LAST WEEK WHAT IS THE LITURGICAL COLOR FOR ORDINARY TIME ? – GREEN “Ordinary” comes from the same root as our word “ordinal”, and in this sense means “the counted weeks. In the Roman Catholic Church tradition, these are the common weeks which do not belong to a proper season. In the current form of the Roman Rite adopted following the Second Vatican Council, Ordinary Time consists of 33 or 34 Sundays and is divided into two sections. The first portion extends from the day following the Feast of the Baptism of Christ until the day before Ash Wednesday (the beginning of Lent). It contains anywhere from three to eight Sundays, depending on how early or late Easter falls. QUESTION FOR THIS WEEK WHAT IS THE LITURGICAL COLOR FOR PENTECOST AND PALM SUNDAY? ANSWER IN NEXT WEEK’S BULLETIN 3. IN SUPPORT OF GUN CONTROL – LETTER FROM A PARISHIONER Dear Fellow St. Ignatius Parishioners, I am Sarah Doyle, wife, mother of two young children, and a fellow parishioner involved in advocacy for stronger gun legislation in our state and country. As a Catholic, I believe strongly in the sanctity of life, and after the tragedy in Newtown, CT this past December, I was moved to action. That action on my part includes advocacy work for the betterment of stronger gun laws in our state, as well as federally. As you may know, this has not been an easy road for those of us who support common sense gun legislation, but still we persist in our efforts to reduce the numbers of gunrelated deaths and injuries in our state and country. This summer, along with Susan Stuart, I had the privilege of chaperoning a group of high school students to Camden, New Jersey. During our week there, I heard stories about the disproportionate number of gun-related deaths and injuries in that city. The injustice of that statistic stayed with me, and became even more profound when I learned that this is happening all over our country, including right here in our city of Boston. Though I had worked on the issue prior to going to Camden, my experience there solidified for me what God calls me to do. Despite the pushback from people on the other side of the issue, or even from people who agree that something must be done but don't believe things can change, I felt strongly then, as I do now, that change is indeed possible and God calls us to do it. On our last day in Camden, I made a promise that I would live my faith and work for justice on this issue. To that end, I have been working closely with two groups: Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (a national organization with a chapter here in Boston) and the Massachusetts Coalition for the Prevention of Gun Violence, a coalition made up of organizations around the city and state, some religiously affiliated. Both of these organizations are heavily involved in lobbying for stronger gun laws at the state and federal levels. So, how can you join me in advocating for stronger gun legislation in our state and country? *Lobbying: Postcards addressed to state and federal legislators will be made available after each Mass on November 2nd and 3rd in the Lower Church and the Gathering Space Upper Church. Sign your name and urge your legislators to support common-sense legislation. Postcards will be collected and delivered to legislators. *Attend "Lobby Day" on Wednesday, November 6th from 10- 2 at the State House, and show your support for HR 3253, the bill currently before the House on gun violence prevention. *Sign up for the mailing list for Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America- Boston chapter. Moms Demand Action holds local events regularly and sends out action emails to its members once a week with easy and effective actions you can take to support stronger laws. (Everyone welcome, not just Moms!) *Attend an upcoming forum on gun violence prevention: “Solving the Public Health Crisis of Gun Violence: What can our legislatures do? What can we do?” This will be held on Tuesday, November 12th at 7pm at Common Street Community Church in Natick. The event will be a panel discussion with State Rep David Linsky, Angus McQuilken of MA Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, and Dr. Michael Siegel, Professor at Boston University School of Public Health. *Read the America magazine article written by Fr. James Martin, S.J. about gun control as a social justice issue. In it, he details how he believes we as Catholics are compelled to act on this issue in the interest of the sanctity of all human life. http://americamagazine.org/content/all-things/why-gun-control-religious-issue Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
