OUTREACH MINISTRIES SHATTUCK HOLIDAY MEAL AND CHRISTMAS GIFT DRIVE: THANK YOU again for your very generous support! The Meal went very well, thanks to an abundance of wonderful food and a great kitchen prep staff and serving staff, all led by Tammy Scott, the Meal coordinator. We are grateful to our friends at Crescent Ridge Dairy in Sharon for donating their awesome egg nog and to White Mountain Creamery for the ice cream toppings. The Gift Drive process went very smoothly, thanks to many gift “runners” and sorters. Ann Carmola once again coordinated the whole Drive effort, from contacting agencies, to working up the gift lists, to organizing the ornament cutting and gift sorting and packing. Additionally, fourteen parish families “adopted” families from St. Patrick’s in Lawrence and St. Mary’s in Lynn for gifting. REFUGEE AWARENESS ON WORLD DAY FOR MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES INTERFAITH STUDY: “FINDING GRACE, DISCOVERING OURSELVES” Pope Francis has a special concern for refugees and has designated 1/19/2014 as World Day for Migrants and Refugees. The St. Ignatius ARRUPE group (Assisting Refugee Resettlement Using Parish Energies) will offer a refugee awareness session in the Media Room in the lower church at 11 am on 1/19/2014. Find out what the Church does to help refugees: globally, around the US, in Massachusetts and right here at St. Ignatius Parish. A brief presentation will be accompanied by a screening of the Irish film: Crossing Salween, dealing with a young Burmese girl's journey to freedom across the border. Don't miss it! If you can’t make it on that date, but want to know more, email: engler [at] bc.edu or devlin.jane [at] gmail.com. Last spring our parish invited Temple Beth Elohim (TBE) to an interfaith study session in which Marsha Mirkin led us to consider the “burning bush.” There will be a followup interfaith session on January 11th from 3-5pm at TBE, which is Marsha’s faith community. Parishioners from St. Ignatius have kindly been invited to TBE located at 10 Bethel Rd. in Wellesley to study the story of Hannah, whose Hebrew name means “Grace.” This story’s discussion of grace seems to call out for interfaith conversation. How can we understand the idea of grace in the story of Hannah and in our own lives? We meet Hannah in the story as she struggles with issues that are beyond her control. What can we learn from her struggle and her response to life’s challenges? How do we encounter God during our difficult times? Please join us at Temple Beth Elohim to study this story of longing and love, and its vision of hope and justice. THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONSTITUTION ON THE SACRED LITURGY “[Christ] is present in his word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy Scriptures are read in the Church” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, 7) The Second Vatican Council emphasized the place of Scripture in the liturgy. More Scripture was added to the liturgy and Scripture began to be read in the vernacular language (or the language of the people) rather than Latin. The theological nature of Scripture in the liturgy is reaffirmed by the Council, because it reminds us that in the proclamation of Scripture, Christ is indeed present. The words of Scripture provide more than information, they embody Christ’s very presence. The words embody Christ himself. When we listen and take to heart Christ’s words, we grow closer to him. There is a building of communion in the acceptance of Christ’s words between Christ and those who listen. In other words, the proclamation of Scripture builds the relationship of people with Christ himself. We come to know who Christ is and what he means for us who are called to live his words. 3.
