Come to this Yoga Basics class taught by experienced yoga instructor, Liz Padula. Liz has been practicing yoga since 1994, is the founder and owner of Artemis Yoga, a new studio in Watertown, MA and is a 500 hour Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher (RYT-500.) Beginners can explore and start their yoga practice in a supportive, friendly, low-key way. Learn fundamental asana poses with a strong focus on alignment mixed with some flow so you can build strength while relaxing your mind. Leave your “to-do” list at home and come join us with a yoga mat. You’ll leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. If you have any questions about the format of the class, please contact Liz at liz@artemisyoga.com. All parishioners are also welcome to a free class anytime at Artemis Yoga in Watertown, MA by mentioning “St.Ignatius.” On February 20, Marsha Mirkin will once again be with us from 10:00 -noon in the Parish Office Lower Level (note location change from prior bulletins). We will study together the first chapter of the Book of Ruth, a story of the times when we might be unable to experience the caring that surrounds us and the resulting cutoff from the community as well as the unexpected, impossible to explain, loving kindness of God. Through the story, we will explore the transformative power of devoted relationships that support us as we begin the road toward healing. We start with a cautionary tale about responses to life’s challenges and move to the moment when a person can accept another’s caring and begin to thrive. Please join us for this story of an amazing journey, which mirrors our own. Jesuit Collaborative Lenten Program The Jesuit Collaborative invites you to a five-week program on Ignatian prayer during Lent. Structured around the Sunday readings, presentations by Joe Simmons, S.J., and Kim Smith will lead participants in reflections from the Ignatian tradition, while incorporating concepts and techniques of Ignatian prayer. Faith sharing, quiet reflection and themes from the Year of Mercy will be included. Whether Ignatian spirituality is new to you, or you have found strength in the Ignatian tradition for years, this program is a great way to explore your faith more deeply during Lent. Starts Thursday, February 18, continues on consecutive Thursdays through March 17 at St. Ignatius Church in Chesnut Hill. For more information and to register, see http://conta.cc/1PFAmai Lenten Film & Reflection Join us on Saturday, March 12, as we reflect on moments of spirit and grace in Under the Same Moon/La Misma Luna. Focus on Homelessness: During February, members of the Outreach Ministries Commission invite you to join them in reflecting upon the topic of homelessness and how we might better respond to the issue, as a group and/or individually. We are presently serving a number of folks with no permanent home. This month, we’re working for and with Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program, Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter, St. Francis House and CRS Rice Bowl. Printed materials detailing the mission of each of the above groups can be found on the Outreach table in the Gathering Space. Registration is Open for the May 1 Project Bread Walk for Hunger. Go to www.projectbread.org and link to Walk for Hunger. TEAM IGNATIUS is set up and ready for members. Changes to the Walk include a new route (10 miles instead of 20) and a 5K Run. In this Year of Mercy, you can help feed the hungry in a very concrete way. Rite of Sending RCIA Catechumens and Candidates We celebrate the rite of sending during the 10am mass by asking the godparents/sponsors of the following catechumens: Deborah Lovett, Yun Peng-Szatenek, and Yi Zhang (those who wish to be baptized at the Easter Vigil) and candidates Ryan Brenneman and Amy Moolten (baptized Christians from another faith tradition) if they are truly ready to take this next step. After hearing that they say "yes" to a more intense preparation, they will attend the rite of election this afternoon at the Cathedral with the Archbishop and hundreds of others throughout the archdiocese. There, the godparents testify before Cardinal O'Malley that they have seen God at work in the lives of their companions and they are ready to be initiated into the Church. Deborah, Yun and Yi are asked to give their lives to God by giving their names to the Church for enrollment in the Book of the Elect. These Elect are those called by God to be his own, to be washed in the waters of baptism, anointed by the Spirit in confirmation and nourished by Christ in the Eucharist. Please pray for them during this Lent. Meeting for Parents of Children with Special Needs On Sunday, February 28th, from 8:45am-9:45am in the Parish Offices Living Room (second floor) and from 11am-12pm in the Choir/Media Room, parents are invited to join in a conversation on how to best meet the faith formation needs of all of our young parishioners. Thank you! Book Discussion On Sunday, March 6, there will be a discussion of the book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. According to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu, "Bryan Stevenson is America’s young Nelson Mandela, a brilliant lawyer fighting with courage and conviction to guarantee justice for all. Just Mercy should be read by people of conscience in every civilized country in the world to discover what happens when revenge and retribution replace justice and mercy.” Reviewer David Cole says, “Just Mercy is a remarkable amalgam, at once a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields." Please join the discussion of this book on March 6 at 11:15 in the parish office. Little Rock Scripture Study This semester, the Little Rock Scripture Study Group meets again to study “The Gospel According to Luke” since it is the year of Luke in Cycle C. Marked by the compassion of Jesus, the gospel stories of Luke demonstrate the universal nature of Jesus’ mission. Luke’s focus on God’s faithfulness will encourage you to trust. The study begins on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:15 pm in the Old Choir Room. The cost is $16.00 which includes a commentary, study guide and video presentation of the study. New members are always welcome. To register, please call John Dafarra at 781-899-9540. BC Corner Who are the "Nones"? Thursday, February 25, 5:30 P.M. Nancy T. The Ignatian Way in the Year of Mercy From Advent to Pentecost - A Journey with St. Ignatius of Loyola El Camino Ignaciano en el Año de la Misericordia, Del Adviento a Pentecostés - Una Jornada con San Ignacio de Loyola Lent, Scripture Cuaresma, Escritura Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry. Reflection Every Lent begins with the story of the temptation of Jesus. Why? The most obvious reason is that Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and we are beginning a time of fasting and prayer that too will last for 40 days. It may also be a reminder of our human weakness. We know our vulnerability and how susceptible we are to “temptation”. Another way of thinking about the beginning of Lent is that we are invited to see Jesus himself struggling to accept his unique humanity. Isn’t the temptation really to use power and position and his relationship with God to “lord it over others” rather than serve? At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus rejects this temptation and accepts his mission and ministry with genuine humility. The Life of Ignatius With his companions, Ignatius pronounced first vows in the chapel at Montmarte on August 15, 1534. They decided to go to the Holy Land but were unable. Instead they decided to go to Rome to ask for an audience with the Pope. On their way, in the chapel of La Storta, Ignatius had a powerful experience of God. In this moment Ignatius asked God to “place him with his Son”. Question for Reflection In the coming weeks we will ask God to “place us with his son, Jesus” Our meditations will come from the Second Week of the Spiritual Exercises, in which we are invited to be “with Jesus”, to know him more intimately, to love him more intensely and to follow him more closely. Do you feel that Jesus shares your own frailty and vulnerability? Or is he above that? Is his humanity different from yours? Video Reflection, For the Greater Glory As you reflect on this question, you are invited to review For The Greater Glory, the dance/theater piece on the Spiritual Exercises, created by Fr. Bob. The Second Week of the Exercises begins at 26 mins into the video with the scene of the Baptism . The temptations of Jesus can be found at 39 minutes. Listen to the words of Ignatius and his meditation on the Two Standards.
