Saturday Lenten Wellness Program with Liz Padula
*Note location change to BC Brighton Dance Studio
at 2115 Commonwealth Ave. (across the street from
BC, on the STM campus). February 20, 9–10 am
Have you ever wanted to try yoga but felt intimidated by fastpaced, more advanced classes? Or think you need to be more
“flexible” before you even try? Come to this Yoga Basics class
taught by experienced yoga instructor, Liz Padula. Liz has been
practicing yoga since 1994, is the founder and owner of Artemis
Yoga, a new studio in Watertown, MA and is a 500 hour Registered Yoga Alliance Teacher (RYT-500.) Beginners can explore
and start their yoga practice in a supportive, friendly, low-key
way. Learn fundamental asana poses with a strong focus on
alignment mixed with some flow so you can build strength while
relaxing your mind. Leave your “to-do” list at home and come
join us with a yoga mat. You’ll leave feeling relaxed and refreshed. If you have any questions about the format of the class,
please contact Liz at liz@artemisyoga.com. All parishioners are
also welcome to a free class anytime at Artemis Yoga in Watertown, MA by mentioning “St.Ignatius.”
On February 20, Marsha Mirkin will once again be with us from
10:00 -noon in the Parish Office Lower Level (note location
change from prior bulletins). We will study together the first
chapter of the Book of Ruth, a story of the times when we might
be unable to experience the caring that surrounds us and the
resulting cutoff from the community as well as the unexpected,
impossible to explain, loving kindness of God. Through the story, we will explore the transformative power of devoted relationships that support us as we begin the road toward healing. We
start with a cautionary tale about responses to life’s challenges
and move to the moment when a person can accept another’s
caring and begin to thrive. Please join us for this story of an
amazing journey, which mirrors our own.
Jesuit Collaborative Lenten Program
The Jesuit Collaborative invites you to a five-week program on
Ignatian prayer during Lent. Structured around the Sunday
readings, presentations by Joe Simmons, S.J., and Kim Smith will
lead participants in reflections from the Ignatian tradition, while
incorporating concepts and techniques of Ignatian prayer. Faith
sharing, quiet reflection and themes from the Year of Mercy will
be included.
Whether Ignatian spirituality is new to you, or you have found
strength in the Ignatian tradition for years, this program is a
great way to explore your faith more deeply during Lent. Starts
Thursday, February 18, continues on consecutive Thursdays
through March 17 at St. Ignatius Church in Chesnut Hill. For
more information and to register, see http://conta.cc/1PFAmai
Lenten Film & Reflection
Join us on Saturday, March 12, as we reflect on moments of spirit and grace in Under the Same Moon/La Misma Luna. This
Mexican-American drama in English and Spanish centers on a
young boy's journey across the border to be reunited with his
mother. This moving tale of courage and hope will help us reflect
on the realities of immigration. We gather in the Friary Room at
5:00 for a light supper followed by film viewing in the Media
Room. RSVP by March 8th to Katherine.Maher@bc.edu
Living the Spiritual Exercises
The "Living the Spiritual Exercises" group meets this Sunday,
2/14 at 3:30 pm in the Lannon Chapel. All who have participated in the Spiritual Exercises or 19th Annotation Retreat are welcome.
Choir for the Sacred Triduum
Faith Formation
The choir will begin their preparations for Holy Week beginning
on Wednesday, Feb.10. Experienced choral singers are invited to
join our music ministry for these extraordinary liturgies. A detailed schedule is available. Contact Michael Burgo at burgo@bc.edu for details.
Classes will not meet on Sunday, February 14th and 21st, due to
the public school winter vacation. Classes will resume on Sunday, February 28th.
Outreach Ministries
February 27: We'll begin our Socks and Flip-Flops
Drive for Boston Health Care for the Homeless
Program on February 27/28, ending March
19/20. This year, we’ll also collect $5 CVS,
McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts gift cards that the Street
Team will give to its patients.
Hungering for the Journey
Join our parish community—and nearly 14,000 Catholic communities
across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS
Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s rice bowl from the Outreach table or
the Lannon Chapel.
First Week of Lent – Hungering for Opportunity: Our
journey with CRS Rice Bowl begins in Colombia, where coffee beans are
changing lives! What actions can we take this Lent to change lives—at
home and around the world? Visit crsricebowl.org for more about CRS
in Colombia.
Focus on Homelessness: During February, members of the
Outreach Ministries Commission invite you to
join them in reflecting upon the topic of homelessness and how we might better respond to the
issue, as a group and/or individually. We are
presently serving a number of folks with no permanent home. This month, we’re working for
and with Boston Health Care for the Homeless
Program, Pine Street Inn Shattuck Shelter, St.
Francis House and CRS Rice Bowl. Printed materials detailing the mission of each of the above groups can be found on the Outreach table in
the Gathering Space.
Registration is Open for the May 1 Project Bread Walk for Hunger. Go to www.projectbread.org and link to Walk
for Hunger. TEAM IGNATIUS is set up and ready
for members. Changes to the Walk include a new
route (10 miles instead of 20) and a 5K Run. In this
Year of Mercy, you can help feed the hungry in a very
concrete way.
Rite of Sending RCIA Catechumens and Candidates
We celebrate the rite of sending during the 10am mass by asking
the godparents/sponsors of the following catechumens: Deborah Lovett, Yun Peng-Szatenek, and Yi Zhang (those who wish to
be baptized at the Easter Vigil) and candidates Ryan Brenneman
and Amy Moolten (baptized Christians from another faith tradition) if they are truly ready to take this next step.
After hearing that they say "yes" to a more intense preparation,
they will attend the rite of election this afternoon at the Cathedral with the Archbishop and hundreds of others throughout the
archdiocese. There, the godparents testify before Cardinal
O'Malley that they have seen God at work in the lives of their
companions and they are ready to be initiated into the Church.
Deborah, Yun and Yi are asked to give their lives to God by giving their names to the Church for enrollment in the Book of the
Elect.
These Elect are those called by God to be his own, to be washed
in the waters of baptism, anointed by the Spirit in confirmation
and nourished by Christ in the Eucharist. Please pray for them
during this Lent.
Meeting for Parents of Children with Special Needs
On Sunday, February 28th, from 8:45am-9:45am in the Parish
Offices Living Room (second floor) and from 11am-12pm in the
Choir/Media Room, parents are invited to join in a conversation
on how to best meet the faith formation needs of all of our young
parishioners. Whether or not you currently have children registered in our Faith Formation Program, feel free to join us in this
important conversation. Contact Susan Stuart if you would like
more information.
Confirmation Retreat
The Confirmation Spring Retreat will be from March 4th March 6th at The Connors Center in Dover. All first year Confirmation students are encouraged to attend one retreat during
the year. Second year Confirmation students, who are to be confirmed in April, must attend at least one retreat during the year.
If you missed the deadline to register for the retreat or if you
have any questions, please contact Anabella Morabito at morabian@bc.edu.
Summer Service Trips for Students
As a Jesuit parish our community always seeks to engage with
larger issues of social justice on a local and global scale. If you are
a Middle School or High School student you are invited to participate in our summer service opportunities this year. We will be
having various projects for different interest and different ages;
the projects we offer are situated in Camden New Jersey, Port Au
Prince Haiti, and around Boston. If this is of interest to you and
your family, please contact Anabella Morabito at morabian@bc.edu for more information and registration.
Pope Francis is on the road again!
This week, Pope Francis will travel to Mexico to bring the same
spirit of compassion and solidarity that he shared with the U.S.
last September. Included in his visit will be a Mass at the U.S.Mexico border to bring attention to the plight of migrants and
refugees in our hemisphere. There are 3 ways for you to join the
Ignatian network in further amplifying Pope Francis' voice and
the Gospel call to be people of compassion and solidarity. Attend
the Liturgy of Solidarity at Boston College, Wednesday, February
16th, at 6pm. 2. Sign on to Ignatian Solidarity Network's message to Congress calling for legislators to embrace the Pope's call
for humane migration policies throughout the hemisphere by
going to the ISN webpage at ignatiansolidarity.net. 3. Follow
Pope Francis' visit to Mexico and watch the Mass on the border
live on Wednesday, February 17th via livestream at 6PM ET.
Link can be found at ignatiansolidarity.net. If you are interested
in working to spread the message of the Pope's visit locally, contact Susan Stuart.
Diocesan Appeal
This past week, many of you received a letter from Cardinal Seán
requesting your support of the 2016 Catholic Appeal. If you have
not already done so, please prayerfully consider making an early
pledge. Our parish directly benefits from the 50 ministries supported by the Appeal and your gift will help us reach our 2016
goal. You may mail your pledge or visit bostoncatholicappeal.org to give online. Thank you!
Book Discussion
On Sunday, March 6, there will be a discussion of the book Just
Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson.
According to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Desmond Tutu, "Bryan
Stevenson is America’s young Nelson Mandela, a brilliant lawyer
fighting with courage and conviction to guarantee justice for all.
Just Mercy should be read by people of conscience in every civilized country in the world to discover what happens when revenge and retribution replace justice and mercy.” Reviewer David Cole says, “Just Mercy is a remarkable amalgam, at once
a searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring
testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields." Please join the discussion of this book on March 6
at 11:15 in the parish office.
Little Rock Scripture Study
This semester, the Little Rock Scripture Study Group meets
again to study “The Gospel According to Luke” since it is the
year of Luke in Cycle C. Marked by the compassion of Jesus, the
gospel stories of Luke demonstrate the universal nature of Jesus’
mission. Luke’s focus on God’s faithfulness will encourage you to
trust. The study begins on Wednesday, February 24 at 7:15 pm
in the Old Choir Room. The cost is $16.00 which includes a
commentary, study guide and video presentation of the study.
New members are always welcome. To register, please call John
Dafarra at 781-899-9540.

Roughly one-third of young adults now say they have no religious affiliation; but who are they and why aren’t they in
church? What do they mean when they protest that they are
“spiritual”? This presentation examines the demographic, political, and cultural trends that have expanded the ranks of the unaffiliated, and asks what local communities of faith can do in
response. Free of charge and open to the public

as pastor and address the needs and areas that are of greatest
importance to him here at St. Ignatius:
! repair of the buttress on the Commonwealth Avenue side of
the church
! a fund that continues to support the arts in worship at St.
Ignatius

! a fund that provides ongoing support for St. Anne’s Parish
in Kingston, Jamaica
A great video of Fr. Bob’s Legacy and his priorities can be found
on the parish website. We hope that you will join this effort and
consider a gift in honor of Fr. Bob. To date, more than $320,000
has been pledged toward our $1,000,000 goal for the Legacy
Fund.
Any amount is welcome. Checks should be made to St. Ignatius
Church with Fr. Bob Legacy Campaign noted in the memo field.

The Ignatian Way in the Year of Mercy
From Advent to Pentecost - A Journey with St. Ignatius of Loyola
El Camino Ignaciano en el Año de la Misericordia,
Del Adviento a Pentecostés - Una Jornada con San
Ignacio de Loyola
Lent, Scripture
Cuaresma, Escritura
Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan
and was led by the Spirit into the desert for forty days,
to be tempted by the devil.
He ate nothing during those days,
and when they were over he was hungry.
Reflection
Every Lent begins with the story of the temptation of Jesus.
Why? The most obvious reason is that Jesus was in the desert for
40 days and we are beginning a time of fasting and prayer that
too will last for 40 days. It may also be a reminder of our human
weakness. We know our vulnerability and how susceptible we
are to “temptation”. Another way of thinking about the beginning of Lent is that we are invited to see Jesus himself struggling
to accept his unique humanity. Isn’t the temptation really to use
power and position and his relationship with God to “lord it over
others” rather than serve? At the beginning of his ministry, Jesus
rejects this temptation and accepts his mission and ministry
with genuine humility.
The Life of Ignatius
With his companions, Ignatius pronounced first vows in the
chapel at Montmarte on August 15, 1534. They decided to go to
the Holy Land but were unable. Instead they decided to go to
Rome to ask for an audience with the Pope. On their way, in the
chapel of La Storta, Ignatius had a powerful experience of God.
In this moment Ignatius asked God to “place him with his Son”.
Question for Reflection
In the coming weeks we will ask God to “place us with his son,
Jesus” Our meditations will come from the Second Week of the
Spiritual Exercises, in which we are invited to be “with Jesus”, to
know him more intimately, to love him more intensely and to
follow him more closely.
Do you feel that Jesus shares your own frailty and vulnerability?
Or is he above that? Is his humanity different from yours?
Video Reflection, For the Greater Glory
As you reflect on this question, you are invited to review For The
Greater Glory, the dance/theater piece on the Spiritual Exercises, created by Fr. Bob. The Second Week of the Exercises begins
at 26 mins into the video with the scene of the Baptism . The
temptations of Jesus can be found at 39 minutes. Listen to the
words of Ignatius and his meditation on the Two Standards.
You can access the video at www.blde.org or
americamedia.org/ignatian-dance
Decidieron ir a
