Math 10: Elementary Algebra Queensborough Community College Spring 2016 Prerequisite: None. Hours: 5 Class Hours (0 Credits) Course Description: Signed numbers, polynomials, geometric concepts, graphing, and solutions of linear and quadratic equations by graphing and algebraic methods, word problems, slope and 𝑦-intercept, factoring and its applications. Degree Programs General Education Objectives: Math 10 prepares students: to use quantitative skills and mathematical reasoning to solve problems; to reason quantitatively and mathematically as required in their fields of interest and in everyday life; to integrate their mathematical knowledge and skills across the courses and experiences in their programs of study; to use information management and technology skills effectively for lifelong learning. Course Objectives/Outcomes: Students are expected: to know the basic concepts and skills of algebra and geometry that are outlined in the course description above; to apply their knowledge when solving problems mathematically in disciplines where required; to draw conclusions from algebraic and graphical solutions to problems; to communicate the results in written and oral format. CUNY Academic Works Calculators: Calculators are NOT allowed. Evaluation of Student Learning CUNY has the following requirements for passing Elementary Algebra. 1) Must have a 70% overall average. 2) Must have at least a minimum grade of 60% on the uniform final exam. Your overall average will be based on the following: Tests: 35% Quizzes/In class assignments: 15% Online Homework: 15% Final Exam: 35% Online Homework: Homework assignments will use an online homework system. Tests There will be three or four tests. Your lowest test grade will be dropped and replaced with your second lowest test grade. Test will typically be announced 1-2 class periods in advance. Each test will be approximately 1 hour in length. Quizzes There will be multiple quizzes and in class assignments throughout the semester. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class. Your top 5 quiz grades will be used to compute your Quiz Average. Final Exam: The final exam is a uniform, cumulative exam administered throughout CUNY.
