INTERNATIONAL ACADEMY OF ARCHITECTURE (IAA)
NGO IN CONSULTATIVE STATUS WITH ECONONOMIC AND SOCIAL
COUNCIL of
UNITED NATIONS
The International Academy of Architecture (IAA), NGO in Consultative Status
with ECOSOC – United Nations, a non-profit, self-financing organization, with its H.Q. in
Sofia, Bulgaria, was found on September 21, 1987.
The list of main objectives of IAA include:
- to stimulate the development of architecture, urban planning and architectural theory;
- to promote the development of the architectural education;
- to organize post-graduated courses, workshops and master classes for young talented
architects from all over the world;
- to support and proclaim United Nations` programs, declarations and events;
- to organize international conferences and meetings;
- to organize “Interarch-Sofia”- World Triennial of Architecture;
Currently the IAA avails of active members in the following 39 countries: Armenia,
Argentina, Austria, Belarus, Brazil, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, China, Czech
Republic, Denmark, Georgia, Germany, Finland, France, Greece, Japan, Jordan, India, Italy,
Kazakhstan, Korea, Lithuania, Malta, Mexico, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Russia,
Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States of
America, Uzbekistan.

The governing bodies of the IAA are the General Assembly and the Academic Council.
The Assembly consists of all the Academy's members (68 Academicians and 99 Professors)
and is held every three years. They amend and approve the IAA Statute and Regulations,
nominate and elect new Academicians, the Academic Council members and its President.
The IAA President elects Visiting Professors of IAA.
The XI-th IAA Assembly was held at 13 May 2012 in Sofia.
The Academic Council and its President administrate the IAA. The members of the
Academic Council (IAA Academicians) and its President are elected for a three-year
mandate. The Academic Council holds a meeting once a year to coordinate the activities of
the IAA and to approve the IAA programs, staff and budget. The Academic Council elects
the new IAA professors.
The IAA affiliates the following organizations:
- The International Forum of Young Architects;
- The Research Centre for New Technologies and Ecological Energy - “Conscious
Architecture”;
- The section “Architectural Theory, Creativity and Criticism”;
- INTERPROJECT, the Academy's Institute of Architectural Design and Research;
- “INTERACADEMICA”- IAA Foundation which supports the IAA activity;
Active IAA international branch-centers are functioning in:
- Paris- European Academy of Architecture with President Pierre-Andre Dufetel, IAA
Academician;
- Moscow- with President Yuri Platonov, IAA Academician;
- Rotterdam- with President Jan Hoogstad, IAA Academician;
- Tokyo- with President Toyo Ito, IAA Academician;
- USA- with President Brian Spencer, IAA Academician;
- Rome- with President Manfredi Nicoletti, IAA Academician;
- Istanbul- with President Ahmet Vefik Alp, IAA Academician;
- Zurich- with President Justus Dahinden, IAA Academician;
- Shanghai – representation of the IAA, represented by arch. Marin Keremidski
The main activities of IAA are focused on the coordination and organization of
international programs, professional forums and activities such as:
- Sustainable Development of Architecture and Urban Planning;
- Architectural Theory and its Application;
- Architectural Education and Professional Qualification;

Social Housing;
Architecture and Ecology;
Support and promotion of United Nations` programs, declarations and activities;
Architecture and children;
Exhibitions;
“Interarch-Sofia”- World Triennial of Architecture;
Dissemination of professional information
The World Triennial of Architecture (INTERARCH- Sofia), the major event of IAA, is
permanently held every three years, as well as global and regional seminars, workshops,
master classes and symposia, held under the auspices of jointly UNESCO, UIA, UNDTCD,
UNCHS, UNEP and other organizations.
During its substantial period of active functioning IAA dedicated special efforts to the
establishment of an extensive training program, including post-graduate training courses for
young talented architects from all over the world, as well as international architectural
competitions.

competitions held since 1987, including joint activities with UNCHS(Habitat) and UNCED,

History – brief overview of the constitution of IAA and establishment of working
relations and signed agreements with authoritative international organizations,
institutions, governmental and non-governmental organizations
By a resolution of the United Nations Economic and Social Council of May 11, 1989,
the IAA has been granted with Consultative Status.
The IAA has also been granted Consultative Status with UNICEF in 1990 and with
UNIDO in 1990.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding between the IAA and UNCHS
(Habitat), signed on March 7, 1988 and its Supplement, 1990, 1993, both organizations
agreed to collaborate in carrying out research, investigation and information activity in the
sphere of urban development, regional planning and synthesis of architecture with other arts;
public utilities, engineering and related areas; environmental protection; reducing housing
shortage; development of new building materials and the provision of technical assistance.
The Memorandum of Understanding between the IAA and UNEP signed on February
5 , 1990, envisaged collaboration in the area of built environment. It was foresees
cooperation in undertaking of Training Courses on Application of Environmental Guidelines

for Settlement Planning and Management for architects. The pilot course was held in
September 1992 with published Proceedings.
Agreements of cooperation have been signed with UIA (International Union of
Architects as well as with:

the IAA and the Pan-American Federation of Associations of Architects (FAPA);

the Ibero-American Council of Associations of Architects (CIANA);

the Mexican National Academy of Architecture;

the Bulgarian Union of Architects;

the University of Khartoum, Sudan;

Free University Brussels (VUB);

the Russian Ministry of Culture;

the State Committee for Construction, Goscomarchitecture and the “Academy of Fine
Arts”- Russia;

the Nautilus Foundation of USA;

International Consortium of "Ecological Reconstruction";

L’Ordre des Architectes et ingenieurs de Syria.
IAA has been registered in the Central Consultancy Register (ISCR/EL)
INTERARCH – World Triennial of Architecture (INTERARCH- Sofia) is the core
generative concept and event of IAA
One of the most significant traditionally established architectural events, opening
international architectural forum, inviting practitioners, theoreticians and students from all
over the world, profiling a panorama of the tendencies and achievements of the world
contemporary architecture, INTERARCH engages its participants in the exchange of ideas
with leading masters of the world architecture during its more than 30 years of a history.
The 9th to13th World Triennials of Architecture Interarch’2000, Interarch’2003 ,
Interearch`2006, Interarch`2009 and Interarch’2012, were acknowledged under auspices of
UNESCO, the President of Republic of Bulgaria and the International Union of
Architects(UIA). The forthcoming 14th World Triennial of Architecture is be held in 2015, in
Sofia (17-20 May).

Till now the exhibition has entertained visiting presentations in Istanbul, Skopje,
Barcelona, Moscow, Sofia, Makhachkala, Astana, etc.
IAA avails of an extensive archive (paper and digital version) of recent projects and
architectural built works of the majorityof the IAA Academicians and Professors.
During INTERARCH-Sofia IAA significant international exhibitions-competitions take
place, as follows:

architectural projects and built works;

students` Diploma works;

books and magazines on architecture

IAA has initiated an International Club of Architects aiming to organize seminars,
workshops and conferences for its international members, including the former members of
IFYA.
IAA President and IAA members are active participants in the UN General Conferences
and Forums.
IAA supports and actively promotes all UN, UNESCO, UNCHS (Habitat), UNEP and
UNIDO programs, declarations and decisions.
IAA awards three Honorary Prizes.

IAA “Annual Prize” for best architectural project or built work (realized during the
previous year) .

IAA “Grand Prix- Crystal Globe” (every three years) for a substantial contribution
to the development of the world architectural ideas both on theoretical and practical level.

Only IAA members are eligible for the last two Prizes which could be awarded no more
than once to one and the same person.

The IAA distributes information through the IAA publications:
 IAA magazine World Architecture Masters – every WAM presents the architectural
achievements of one IAA member; Till now IAA has published WAM dedicated to:
Massimiliano Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Erick van Egeraat, Manfredi Nicoeltti, Norman Foster,
Mario Botta, Renzo Piano, Ricardo Legorreta, Toyo Ito, Georgi Stoilov, Paul Andreu,
Dominique Perrault, Justus Dahinden, Teodoro Gonzalez de Leon, Yuri Platonov, Tadao
Ando, Daniel Libeskind and Ahmet Vefik Alp. WAM magazine contains: Newsinformation about IAA activity and the new remarkable architectural built works around the

world;
 Publications of guidelines and results of the international workshops and meetings.
 The IAA Publishing Centre initiated issuing a series of monographies of IAA
Academicians: Norman Foster, Frei Otto, Georgi Stoilov etc.
 IAA Review (IAA ceased publishing in 2006).
IAA Publications:
 The main IAA theoretical contribution is CHARTER HORIZON 2000 SUSTAINABLE ARCHITECTURE FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD. It includes
three IAA declarations: "Sustainable Architecture for a Sustainable World" /1994/;
"Eco-policies-Settlements for Sustainable Development" /1996/ and "Declaration on
Education in Architecture"/1997/;
 IAA has approved "Agenda'21" /2000/;
 Declaration in connection with the tragedy of 11 September 2001;
 Declaration “Globalization and Identity in Architecture” /2003/;
 Declaration “To save the suffering people of Haiti”;
 Declaration of IAA. Kusadasi (Turkey) Municipality and UNESCO Heritage Center:
“Against the devastating effect of unplanned large scale rapid urbanization and urban
sprawl over the past 40 years” in Kusadasi town (2011).
