Introductions and Welcome Those in attendance: Rebecca King, Office of Healthy Schools; Carol Cipoletta, RESA 6; Deborah Stine, RESA 8; Paula McCoy, RESA 4; Paula Fields, Office of Healthy Schools; Amanda Meadows, RESA 1; Shelly Kerere, RESA 6, and Melinda Embrey, RESA 3. Unable to attend were Kristi Skaggs, RESA 2; and Milissa Mace, RESA 5. III. Approval of minutes from November 7, 2012 at Harper’s Ferry, WV Reviewed and approved. Motion to approved by Shelly Kerere and seconded by Deborah Stine. IV. Old Business WVBE Policy 2422.8-Medication Administration Revisions On hold at present due to administrative changes at the WVDE. Plan for it to be revisited in Sept. Discussion regarding standing orders for Epi-Pen that some counties have on file. Update regarding HB 2729 that will allow schools to voluntarily maintain and use Epi-Pen auto-injectors. Mylan will give every school 4 Epi-Pens in the 2013 to 2014 school year. V. Updates from WVDE SBIRT Training offerings for School Nurse and LPNs to meet October 2013 substance abuse CEU requirement for licensure renewal. There will be two 70 minute sessions at Kid Strong this summer. Plans are in place for it to be available also at Fall WVASN meeting in Charleston. 2013 KidStrong Conference on June 11 &12, 2013. Some counties are planning to have school on June 11 so plans are being made to offer 1 VI. VII. videotaping of some sessions so that those who cannot attend until June 12 can still get graduate credits. 900 attended last year. 2013 NEW School Nurse and SBHC Orientation on June 13, 2013. Recommended for those who have 5 years or less experience. 2012/13 School Nurse Needs Assessment. It is to be available by first of April and is due in June. 2013 School Nurse Directory. WVASN plans to take new photos at the Kid Strong Conference this summer. Educational materials available by MedExpress cover a variety of topics and are available for use when teaching parents and illnesses/injuries. These may be distributed through the RESA’s. New Business Presentation by Paula Fields, Office of Healthy Schools regarding Community Schools. She also gave a brief presentation about a program used in Sevier County Tenn. that utilizes school site-based telemedicine program for evaluation of students with medical concerns. Presentation of the status of School Nurses in WV. Nursing shortage by 2020. This presents unique challenges for retention and recruitment of BSN school nurses. Discussion with Dr. Neal of WVU-CARDIAC Project from 1:00pm2:00pm. He gave an overview of the program origins and on-going program goals. Susan Haslebacker, Membership Chair of the WVASN, attended as well. Focus of the discussion was on interventions available to students/families who are identified as having risk factors. Also, Dr. Neal reported that screenings do not need to be done fasting. He will forward to Becky the research findings to support this change. Parameters for acanthosis nigricans (a possible marker for insulin resistance) were reviewed by Dr. Neal . If in doubt, lean toward negative results. So discussion pursued about including the CARDIAC report as part of the Kid Strong conference this summer. Review and Revisions to WVCOSN By-Laws – Postponed for next meeting. 2013 Adolescent Vaccination Requirements. No word yet if there will be a grace period next school year. Recommend that the adolescent immunizations be a check-off box on the sports physical form. WVSSAC has rejected this in the past, Becky King to address this with them again. Review possible suggestions for revisions to Policy 2422.7 and Basic and Specialized Health Care Procedure Manual – postponed for next meeting.
