Course Description: This course will thematically explore the literature that has shaped our understanding of what it means to be an individual struggling to find themselves in this vast world; it will help you develop an understanding of common struggles universal to all people. You will also recognize the rich diversity of identities, as well as our shared common values by focusing on the themes of "Identity and Upheaval.” The aim of English 11 will be to master the skills of reading literature critically, communicating effectively, and producing original writing. Students will be expected to utilize creative expression through literary analysis, writing, presentations, research, and team projects. In addition to reading and writing effectively, students will hone their participation and listening skills. As these skills are developed, students will be expected to produce individual and group projects that reflect creativity and understanding of the subject at hand. You will develop composition strategies by analyzing and personally responding to literature, theatre, and film. II. Course Objectives Here are the skills that you will learn during your third trimester of 11th grade English: POETRY • Understanding meaning • Identifying voice/speaker • Recognizing structure and form • Recognizing tone LITERATURE • Symbols • Figurative Language Devices: hyperbole, simile, allusion, metaphor • Irony • Elements of plot TECHNICAL WRITING • Objective vs. subjective voice • Formal vs. informal language • Business vs. Personal style and format; memos, e-mails, business letters III. Salinger The Crucible by Arthur Miller (TBD) Selected poetry from Poetry in Six Dimensions by Carol Clark Writing: Daily, weekly, and journal writing; College Application Essay; 6-Trait Writing Model OUTCOMES: • Generate curiosity about America and Americans through literature • Refine thinking, writing, and communication skills MATERIALS: • Notebooks • Pen/pencil • Text • USB Flash Drive (Recommended, NOT required) • Student Schoolview Account • Email Account • • • • ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS: Effort/positive attitude/participation Late work: 1 day late = 75%, 2 days = 50%, 3 days = 25%, 4 days late = 0. If you are absent or tardy, YOU are responsible to find out what you missed and complete it within the allowed time. • Grades will be posted by student I.D. #; you should know your grade! • All formal written assignments are to be word processed and completed to our mutual satisfaction BEHAVIORAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPECTATIONS: • Be on time. We follow school policy for absences and tardies. • Passes will be virtually non-existent this trimester - accept it when you’re denied your request. Take a tardy if it’s that important! • No electronic devices. • Keep make-up confined to restrooms or home. • NO food or drink (from an open container) is to be consumed in this room. GRADES: • Assignments will be graded on a point system: (92%=A, 82%=B, 72%=C, 62%=D, 59%=F) •You must achieve at least 60% of all offered points to pass this class with a DREMEMBER THIS ALWAYS: IF IT IS NOT GOOD, IT IS NOT DONE!!!
