INTRODUCTION
This report includes the temperature and salinity data collected at
nine shore stations along the Oregon coast from the Columbia River
south to Bandon, Oregon. The purpose of this study is to obtain
basic information and to supplement our monthly offshore oceanographic survey cruises.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES
The collecting sites were selected as far away as possible from the
influence of fresh water and observations were generally made at high
tide. Samples were taken in the surf on sandy beaches and rocky shores,
the Seaside Aquarium settling tank, and the Columbia River Lightship.
The observations were made voluntarily by interested people living
along the Oregon coast and by the U. S. Coast Guard personnel on the
Columbia River tIghtship„ Table 1 and Figure 1.
Temperatures were taken to the nearest 0.1°C with calibrated thermometers (range 5°C to 23°C) contained in a brass bucket with a
plastic liner. Salinity samples were collected in pressure-type
bottles and stored for four months before titration by the Mohr
method (estimated accuracy 0.03 o/00).
For the past twelve years the Seaside Aquarium, temperatures and
salinities have been taken with various uncalibrated thermometers
and Taylor 60°F type Salometers. As a result, the data are presented
as they were originally recorded and Salometer readings are percentage
of salt saturation values. These salinity values were not converted
to hundredths of a part per thousand because the large range of the
Taylor Salometer (0% to 100% saturation) obscured small changes
in salinity.
RESULTS
The shore station data are presented in Table 2 as the monthly
means, maxima, minima, range, and number of observations of temperature and salinity. Table 3 consists of all the observations of
temperature and salinity available, daily or weekly, at each
station.
The weekly salinity observations from June to October 1960 are
plotted in Figure 2 to illustrate periods when 33.00 0/coo or
higher salinity water was observed at shore stations.
The monthly mean Salometer readings at Seaside, years 1949 to 1960,
are plotted in Figure 3 to illustrate the relative fluctuation in
salinity and the influence of the Columbia River floods.
The following features may be noted from the data presented.
During the summer months, upwelling of deep water of high salinity
and low temperature appears intermittently all along the Oregon
coast. The summer OSO cruise data of 1960 (unpublished) indicate
that beyond approximately 15 miles offshore the surface salinity
is less than 33.00 (Woo and that the 33.00 o/oo layer lies below
the surface. As A result, shore station salinities of 33.00 o/oo
or over are thought to be caused by upwelling. Shore station
temperatures lower than offshore surface temperatures were observed
in conjunction with the high salinities in Figure 2.
In 1960, indications of upwelled water on the surface are absent
from the Columbia. Lightship data and intermittent in the Seaside,
Arch Cape, and Netarts data, From Otter Rock and south to Bandon,
the observations are scanty, but upwelling seems to be more continuous. Similar indications of upwelling off the Oregon coast were
reported by Barnes and Paquette (1954).
The Seaside Aquarium salinity data plotted in. Figure 3 illustrate
the fluctuation over the past 12 years and the influence of the
Columbia River floods usually in Ma.y or June. The periods of low
salinities at Seaside generally coincide with the months of maximum
flow of the Columbia as recorded by the Water Resources Division of
the Department of the Interior.
From the monthly mean temperature and salinity data at Seaside, the
twelve-year mean temperature is 10.9°C and the mean Salometer value
is 12.95% salt saturation or, approximately 32.50 0/0o. The years
1949, 1950, 1951, and 1952 were below this mean temperature and
above this mean salinity and the years 1957 and 1958 were above this
mean temperature and below this mean salinity.
