The Skills­based Learning and Assessment Curriculum of the Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville The Skills­based Learning and Assessment Curriculum of the Chicago Military Academy at Bronzeville is a standards­based curriculum designed to provide cadets with skills mastery of the Illinois Learning Standards, ACT WorkKeys® skills and ACT College Readiness Standards. Within these standards frameworks, course objectives are defined as a compilation of the skills and knowledge identified herein. The Critical Benchmark Skills List at Paragraph 4 (below) constitutes the learning standards of this course. 1. Course Description In this course we will discuss, read, evaluate, create, and make music. While in this class you will talk, read, listen, and write about music ­ some things you may have heard of and some you may not. With each assignment or discussion I ask that you are open and respectful to the artist and those sitting among you in this class. Prerequisites: None 2. Course Resources Textbook: None. There will be handouts and articles either provided or brought in by the student. Materials/Purchased Items: Notebook/loose­leaf paper, folder/binder, pencil, attitude (only good ones though!) 3. Course Requirements Cadets are expected to participate and be respectful! A majority of our grade comes from the in class activities and discussions. No particiation = no grade. Class projects, discussions/participation, assessments, assignments, and performances all factor into the cadet’s grade. Computation of Grades: (Modify as necessary) ●

Performances: 10% 4. Critical Benchmark Skills List The following will be the Benchmark Skills for the first quarter. As we are about to enter each quarter from here on out there will be an update on the website, an email, and a letter sent home with the updated Benchmark list. Quarter 1 ● 26.A.3d Music: Read and interpret traditional music notation in a varied repertoire. ● 26A Sing or play accurately simple pitch notation using a symbol system (e.g., icons, syllables, numbers, letters). ● 26.A.2c Music: Classify musical sound sources into groups (e.g., instrumental families, vocal ranges, solo/ensembles). ● 26.A.3c Music: Describe the processes involved in composing, conducting and performing. ● 25.A.2c Music: Identify elements and expressive qualities such as tone color, harmony, melody, form (rondo, theme and variation), rhythm/meter and dynamics in a variety of musical styles. ● 25A.G. Describe tempo(s), dynamic(s), and articulation(s) in an aural example using appropriate terminology. ● 25.A.5 Analyze and evaluate student and professional works for how aesthetic qualities are used to convey intent, expressive ideas and/or meaning. ● 27A.E Explain ways dance, drama, music, and visual art play a part in everyday life (e.g. education, architecture, landscape design, political cartoons, fashion design, background music, television). 5. Students will treat each other, the room and all materials with respect at all times. Students will be on time to class. Seating order will be assigned during the first week of school. Be respectful not only to me but to each other, especially during discussions. Listen! No CD, MP3, phones or other devices allowed during class. Absolutely no sending or receiving of text messages. Take a MATURE ATTITUDE toward correction. Don't be a "know it all." Class is not over until the teacher dismisses it. Don't begin to put your things away until instructed to do so. No food or drinks allowed in the room. You may bring a water bottle. BE BETTER!! No gum allowed in class. Always be prepared for class DO NOT touch the other instruments in the room. Only touch the instruments that are provided for you! Of course all rules/procedures/expectations stated in the CMA­B and CPS Student Handbook also apply while in the music room.
