Chairperson LaPrad expressed CCPI’s thanks to Vicki Nicholson from the Provost’s office for her years of
service to the Council. Ms. Nicholson is retiring from the University after 32 years of employment.

1. Requests for Changes in Course Titles and Descriptions
a. FIN 351, Risk Management and Insurance, 3 s.h.
Current:
Topics examined include: risk management concept of insurance, the
insurance mechanism as a risk treatment device, and the implementation of
risk management decisions using insurance and noninsurance tools in
personal lines.
Proposed:
The primary focus of this course is on evaluating various loss exposures
and analyzing the methods for managing these risks including: personal
lines of insurance, such as auto, homeowners, life, annuity, retirement
plans and related items.
Change: Remove “on” in the first line of the proposed description, the colon in the second
line, and the comma before “such as” in the third line.
b. FIN 371, Investments, 3 s.h.
Current:
Examines the securities markets, security regulation, classes of securities,
and sources of information. Other topics studied include the theory of risk
and return, variable and fixed income security valuation, and an
introduction to fundamental and technical analysis.
Proposed:
Presents a foundation in investments examining various types of financial
instruments, the issuance and trade of securities, mutual funds, theory of
risk and return, modern portfolio theory, capital asset pricing model, bond
prices and yields, bond portfolios, and equity analysis.
c. FIN 451, Personal Insurance and Estate Planning, 3 s.h.
Current:
Personal Insurance and Estate Planning
This course examines such issues as the role of life insurance in personal
risk management; the investment value of life insurance products; and
Social Security, insurance, trust, and annuities in programming and estate
planning.
Proposed:
Foundations of Estate Planning
This course covers various estate planning techniques to mitigate the
financial risks associated with the transfer of wealth during lifetime and at
death. Wills and trusts are discussed. Techniques for reducing, freezing, or
eliminating gift and estate taxes are explained.
d. FIN 471, Security Analysis, 3 s.h.
Current:
Techniques of security analysis. A study of portfolio theory including asset
pricing, the efficient frontier, capital asset pricing theory, single index
models, and the practical application of these techniques in investment
policies and practices. Other topical areas include fixed income portfolio
management and portfolio performance evaluation.
Proposed:
A foundation in security analysis focusing on common stock valuation.
The topics include basics of portfolio theory, application of capital asset
pricing model to equity valuation, framework of stock investing, financial
statement and analysis, relative valuation techniques, and absolute
valuation models.

This bank course integrates a risk/reward framework based on theory with
an intensive study of current issues. Unresolved problems are discussed as
they relate to the financial industry both domestically and abroad, the
regulatory environment and the economy.

The course presents a foundation in futures and options contracts
examining the types of contracts, structure of the markets, pricing of
contracts, and applications in risk management.

 Remove “G” from the request form since CCPI only considers undergraduate
curricular issues.

This course presents the globalization factors, tools, and techniques
encountered/employed by a corporation’s financial management team.
Content examples include: different country-specific economic strengths,
political risks, tax systems, exchange rate risks, and methods to reduce
these risks.
Change: Change abbreviated title to INTL FIN MGT.

a. Marketing
Motion: To approve changes to Marketing minor (Doyle/Piletic)
Dr. Piletic asked what courses are included in the Business Elective and if students are
aware of the range of these courses. Management and Marketing Chair Gordon Rands
responded that the College of Business and Technology advising will communicate to
students which courses are able to be used as Business electives, adding that the list is quite
long and includes courses from all of the Business disciplines within the College.
Dr. Romano asked if it is allowable to include “or” in the options listed within the core.
Chairperson LaPrad responded that this is allowable; the Marketing minor has a variant
core.

Reports
A.
Provost’s Report
Interim Associate Provost Nancy Parsons announced that the Illinois State Board of Education is
transitioning to the usage of new terms in relation to teacher education programs. All teacher
education programs that use the term “certification” will be changed to “licensure,” and, similarly,
“certificate” will be changed to “license.” Ms. Nicholson added that emails will go out to chairs and
deans tomorrow informing them of the change.
Ms. Hamm reminded CCPI that Hal Marchand will replace Chairperson LaPrad on the Council next
spring while he is on sabbatical. Steve Bennett will take over the duties as chair for the spring 2012
semester, and an election for vice chair will occur at the first CCPI meeting in January.
