SENATE AGENDA ITEM III.C.1. 27 August 2013 ANNUAL REPORT 2012-2013 COUNCIL ON CURRICULAR PROGRAMS AND INSTRUCTION The Council on Curricular Programs and Instruction (CCPI) met on a regular basis the first and third Thursdays of the month unless this conflicted with the official holiday schedule of the campus. Members of the council included Steve Bennett, Chair (Geology); Mark Bernards (Agriculture); Jeff Brown, (Music); Judi Dallinger, (Communication); Paige Goodwin (Fall 2012, Psychology); Hongxia Guan (Spring 2013, Chemistry); Ben Lampere, (Spring 2013, SGA Representative); Hal Marchand, (Health Sciences); Jennifer McNabb (History); Cindy Piletic, Secretary (Kinesiology); Bridget Welch, Vice Chair (Sociology and Anthropology); and Chunying Zhao (Computer Science). Ex-officio members of the council were Nancy Parsons, Associate Provost; and Donna Williams from the Registrar's Office. Additional representation from the Provost’s Office was provided by Linda Prosise. The major workload of CCPI dealt with the first itemized duty assigned to it (to recommend to the Faculty Senate approval or disapproval of all new academic programs and courses as well as changes in existing courses which affect catalog copy). CCPI considered the following requests: Type of Request New courses Experimental courses Cross-listings Multiple title requests Changes to existing courses New majors New minors New options New emphases New certificates of undergraduate studies New concentrations Changes in major Changes in minor Changes in options Changes in emphases Changes in concentrations 2012-13 65 11 7 5 72± 1 3 0 4 0 2011-12 42 4 3 4 58 1 4 3 0 0 2010-11 46 7 5 0 61 0 3 5 0 0 2009-10 59 5 1 0 48 0 5 1 0 0 2008-09 39 6 13 3 69# 0 3 2 0 0 2007-08 70 6 1 3 74 2 3 0 0 2 2006-07 93 9 5 7 89* 3 4 3 0 0 2005-06 76 3 3 1 95 2 4 3 0 0 2004-05 27 4 3 0 26 2 1 1 0 0 0 20 8 23 1 0 0 10 7 2 0 3 0 7 5 2 0 0 0 10 3 18 0 1 3 12 6 6 1 0 1 15 4 6 0 0 0 21 19 15 0 0 0 15 2 5 0 0 0 3 2 0 0 0 * Includes two blanket requests of 24 [History] and 32 [Music] that are only counted as 1 each # Includes a blanket request of 27 courses from History that is only counted as 1 ± Includes a blanket request for changes in prerequisites for all upper division BIOL, BOT, and MICR courses that is only counted as 1 As the chart shows, the 2012-13 academic year was the busiest CCPI has had in quite a while. During the nine-year period summarized in the table, the 220 requests considered are second only to the 2006-07 academic year. Part of the high workload can be attributed to the statewide changes in teacher education programs which necessitated development of new courses, revamping of existing courses, and changes in program requirements. The new major approved last year was World Languages and Cultures (Foreign Languages and Literatures). The three new minors approved last year were Network Technologies (Computer Science), Criminalistics (LEJA), and Communication Science and Disorders (CSD). The four new emphases approved last year were developed by the Department of English and Journalism: Creative Writing, Literature, Professional Writing, and Middle School Teaching. CCPI had a productive academic year due to the efforts of its members, ex-officio members, representation from the Provost’s Office, and especially Faculty Senate Office Manager Annette Hamm, without whom we could not efficiently handle the large number of curricular requests we receive each year.
