SSR 2015-14 A Resolution for: Support of Gender Inclusive Housing options at UNI Sponsored by: Senator Place, Senator Kaufman, Senator Evans First Reading: December 10 2014 Vote: 18-0-0 Speaker Action:______________________________________________________ Eric Boisen - Speaker Date WHEREAS: It is the role of the Northern Iowa Student government to speak on behalf of its constituents and the role of the university to ensure student safety; and WHEREAS: NISG has a role in representing student needs and diversity initiatives; and RECOGNIZING: That there are students that come to UNI that do not identify within the gender binary and need a safe self-selected space to live in; and RECOGNIZING: That in order to have a more inclusive campus we need to provide a living and learning space that is intentional in supporting the needs of the LGBT* community; and FURTHER RECOGNIZING: At UNI, gender inclusive/all-gender housing has the potential to be a community of students that intentionally live together in a space that supports students of all gender identities and expressions, provides students with opportunities to learn about themselves and others, and provides a safe space for all students that identify as transgender and gender nonconforming; and BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED: That NISG supports gender inclusive housing initiatives; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That NISG wishes to see these initiatives come to fruition in a timely manner; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That this resolution be sent to UNI President Bill Ruud, Dean of Students Leslie Williams, Assistant to the President for Compliance and Equity Management Leah Gutknecht, Director of Residence Lyn Redington, Vice President of Student Affairs Terrence Hogan, Executive Director of Residence Life Glenn Gray, and to anyone else at the speaker’s discretion.
