UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA PROFESSIONAL & SCIENTIFIC POSITION DESCRIPTION Working Title Academic Support Coordinator Code 2405 Formal Title Advisor II Code 1302 Reports To (Title) CIEP Director Department/College Culture & Intensive English Program Pay Grade III PEC Review Date 09/11 Review Date 09/11 ============================================================== PRIMARY FUNCTION: Oversees development, implementation and evaluation of curriculum for the Culture & Intensive English Program (CIEP); communicates with staff on a regular basis regarding issues related to curriculum; delivers non-credit English language course as needed; counsels students on academic and cross-cultural issues; oversees the delivery of instruction by temporary staff; and completes self-studies and reports required by accrediting bodies and consortiums. PERCENTAGE OF TIME CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 55% 1. Maintains well-integrated, current curricula which facilitates the attainment of CIEP’s goals; oversees development, implementation and evaluation of program curriculum and ensure its integration and coordination between content areas and proficiency levels; communicates with staff on a regular basis regarding issues related to curriculum; guides development of project proposals and curriculum committees toward completion of their assigned tasks; prioritizes and recommends curriculum development and other activities to be undertaken by CIEP; meets with Director to prioritize projects; works with staff on level coordination and textbook selection; maintains current knowledge in the development and delivery of language teaching and provides leadership and direction in curriculum renewal efforts; reviews curriculum and instructional materials on a regular basis; supervises changes to the system like addition of alternative texts or revision of student learner outcomes; engages with external sources of information in development of the curriculum and adoption of materials; and completes self-studies and reports required by accrediting bodies and consortiums. 25% 2. Delivers non-credit English language course as needed; and determines the readiness of students to progress in the CIEP or University academic classes. 10% 3. Observes and supervises temporary staff in consultation with the Director as it relates to delivery of instruction and performance evaluations; assists in organizing in-service orientations; counsels and confers with all staff to ensure high level of service and adherence to academic standards; participates in the development and implementation of in-service workshops and other professional development opportunities for staff such as brown bag lectures and webinars; assists with organizing teaching support systems including educational technologies and learning management systems as well as in-house professional development and training opportunities; and collaborates with external sources regarding professional development opportunities for staff. 10% 4. Counsels students on academic and cross-cultural issues as needed and assists in responding to student grievances; organizes placement testing of new students; and develops reports and memos on student achievement and progress in the CIEP based on analysis of in-house surveys and research. Must demonstrate native or near native proficiency of the English language plus at least one year of demonstrated experience in curriculum development also required.
