UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA PROFESSIONAL & SCIENTIFIC POSITION DESCRIPTION Working Title Student Services Coordinator Code 2646 Formal Title TBD Code TBD Reports To (Title) Director Department/College Culture and Intensive English Program Pay Grade TBD PEC Review Date 04/14 Review Date 04/14 =============================================================== PRIMARY FUNCTION: Develops ideas and plans for cross-cultural activities for CIEP students that reflect the mission of the CIEP by providing opportunities for English language practice, immersion in the local culture and about the academic culture and expectations at UNI; recruits UNI and CIEP students to participate in the Conversation Partners and International Friendship Programs; creates itinerary proposals for special short-term programs; counsels students about issues related to student-teacher conflict, student-student conflict, cultural adjustment, living situations, and issues related to personal well-being; and performs some duties as a Designated School Official (DSO) in the director's absence. PERCENTAGE OF TIME 30% 1. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Develops ideas and plans for cross-cultural activities for CIEP students that reflect the mission of the CIEP by providing opportunities for English language practice, immersion in the local culture and about the academic culture and expectations at UNI; works with CIEP staff to develop academic-oriented follow-up activities for participants; coordinates with UNI faculty, CIEP students and staff for advertising and planning mandatory events such as culture talks and class exchanges; manages all payments and cash reimbursements related to events and develops a budget for all activities based on collected information and review with CIEP Program Coordinator; organizes activities for International Education Week and other campus-wide activities used to internationalize the campus and raise awareness about International Education; promotes activities through various mediums to CIEP students and UNI domestic students; collects feedback regarding activities from CIEP students through surveys; analyzes data and compile a report about the activities after every 8 week session; and supervises two student employees who assist with activity efforts and scheduling them appropriately. 20% 2. Recruits UNI and CIEP students to participate in the Conversation Partners and International Friendship Programs; recruits community members as volunteers for the International Friendship Program; advertises through UNI-online, contacts with residence halls and campus instructors, freshman orientation fairs, volunteer fairs, international opportunity fairs, student organizations, community volunteer agencies, brochures, etc.; designs orientation materials for the International Friendship Program and Conversation Partner Program including Prezi presentations and a handout with the program expectations and cultural awareness notes for volunteers; sends monthly emails to host family volunteers with hosting ideas and notices about upcoming events or ways to get their students involved in the community; serves as a mediator between CIEP students and volunteers when needs or problems arise; conducts orientations for program participants; meets with Office of International Programs to coordinate efforts to expand the International Friendship program; maintains databases for programs including contact information and participation rates; assesses success of the programs and creates reports for the CIEP Director and the Associate Provost for International Programs and supervises student employees who coordinate the details of the conversation partner program and assist with activities. 20% 3. Creates itinerary proposals for special short-term programs, which may include but are not limited to cultural activities, transportation arrangements to and from the university, coordination of on- and off-campus observations, customized lectures and activities for the group focus, assistance with group needs including housing and transportation; executes the special program itinerary, communicating with student employees, temporarily-hired coordinators, instructional staff, office staff and UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA - P&S POSITION DESCRIPTION 2646 Student Services Coordinator page 2 =================================================================== PERCENTAGE OF TIME CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES interpreters to ensure the best experience possible for the visitors; and serves as a 24 hour contact for special program participants. 20% 4. 10% 5. Counsels students about issues related to student-teacher conflict, student-student conflict, cultural adjustment, living situations, and issues related to personal wellbeing; maintains communication with the director about issues when needed; maintains a log of student counseling for record-keeping purposes; and communicates with Student Disability Services and Student Counseling Center when referring a student to one of these on-campus services. Performs some duties as a Designated School Official (DSO) in the director's absence under the direction of the CIEP Director, and the International Student Adviser, who is the Primary Designated School Official at UNI; DSO duties may include creating new I20s, extension of student time on I20s, transferring students to another school, and advising students about F-1 visa regulations; registers enrolled students along with the director in the Student Exchange and Visitor Program (SEVIS) for every 8 week term; and keeps up on new SEVP procedures that require training. =============================================================== GENERAL INFORMATION: Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Public Relations, Event Planning, Student Affairs or related field plus at least one year of experience in working with international students or second language learners and experience in student counseling required. At least six months of experience in event planning or program/activity development also required. Basic training in SEVIS training and at least one year of experience in utilizing financial resources preferred.
