US Fed News July 15, 2006 Saturday Iowa Inventors Develop Ghrelin Alleles ALEXANDRIA, Va., July 15 -- Max F. Rothschild, Kwan-Suk Kim and Lloyd L. Anderson, all from Ames, Iowa, have developed ghrelin alleles and uses of the same for genetically typing animals. According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "Disclosed herein are genetic markers for animal growth, appetite and fatness, methods for identifying such markers, and methods of screening animals to determine those more likely to produce desired growth, appetite and fatness and preferably selecting those animals for future breeding purposes. The markers are based upon the presence or absence of certain polymorphisms in the Ghrelin gene." The inventors were issued U.S. Patent No. 7,074,562 on July 11. The patent has been assigned to Iowa State University Research Foundation Inc., Ames.
