DESCRIPTION:
Problem Statement:
Deep into winter, birds furiously feast on everything in sight to store up for days when
food is scarce. They need a place to eat.
Design Statement:
To help the birds, your job is to design the perfect bird feeder to accommodate them.
Typical species in Colorado include small chickadees, medium sized grosbeaks, and even
large pigeons and crows. Typical foods are small birdseed and sunflower seeds, though as
the nights get cold they also love suet bars (small breakfast-bar sized chunks).
Constraints:
The feeder will have a capacity of between 4-5 cups
Will have a device which will prevent the birds from nesting in the feeder
Be able to be either hung from a branch or hook or mounted on a post
Have a roof that sheds water away from the food
Be able to be opened so that it can be filled it with food
Use the design process to develop at least two designs, and then refine them down to
one. Each team member must keep notes, sketches, etc., in his or her notebook, clearly
labeled as ‘Birdfeeder Project’. It is expected that each team member will have a set of
notes indicating individual contributions to the project.
Each team will then create part files, assembly, balloon, and parts list of the final design
only. Part files must be created commensurate with common construction processes.
Each team will create a two-three page PowerPoint presentation summarizing design
thought process and conclusions. Print the slides out.
DELIVERABLES:
1. Title page with team names, project name, and date
2. Neat and readable preliminary sketches (of each option and then the final option).
Redo them if necessary to make them neat and readable. Include basic dimensions, and
labels as necessary to clarify the designs.
3. Inventor: assembly file and balloon and parts list of the final design. Assembly file
must also be checked off IN CLASS by instructor.
Print ONE copy per team. Include team members’ first and last names neatly on the
assembly file title block. Staple all sheets together in order indicated.
