SHORT STORY SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT
I) Analytical Component
Choosing one of the five short stories from your reading assignment, write a
newspaper article in which you present the details of the fictional story as if they were
fact. For example, if you choose the story “How to Tell Renata,” you might report on the
trial of Jerry.
You must present your article in a newspaper format (columns) with a headline.
Your article must answer these FIVE questions: Who? What? Where? When? Why?

II) Creative Component
Choose/design a creative extension for the same short story you examined for
your analytical component. For example, you might write your own poem, or choose a
published poem that relates to a central theme in the story. You might also consider a
photograph, a song, a video clip.
In a short presentation (1—2 minutes), explain your creative extension to the
class. Your presentation should make clear what the story’s central theme is, and what
your process for choosing or creating your extension involved.
