:
Using your knowledge of Beowulf and specific archetypal patterns, you will analyze a
Greek myth, a myth from a different culture, and a modern film or novel. Your task will be to discuss archetypal connections between Beowulf and the other stories .
• In your group, select a Greek myth from the list that is provided.
•
Read the story together.
• Annotate your story as a group.
• Start to brainstorm a list of archetypes and patterns that appear in your story.
•
Add any similarities you see to Beowulf to your list.
Archetypes and patterns you might see could include the heroic quest, character traits, and any of the other elements from the list we reviewed as a class.
•
Research the background and history of your Greek myth and answer the following questions: Where did the story originate? When did it first appear? To whom is its creation attributed and what is the creator(s) background? Are there any specific connections in the story to the culture from which it originated?
• Find another myth that originated from a different culture that either teaches the same lesson or demonstrates a similar archetypal pattern.
•
Think of a present day film or novel that shares archetypal patterns with your myths. Avoid titles that simply retell an original myth.
•
Prepare a 15-minute presentation in which you summarize your Greek myth and annotation for the class. Your key points MUST be on a visual of some kind. Try to start with a dramatic or creative capture technique for the class.
• Review your list of archetypal qualities in the story for the class. Again, key points must be on a visual of some kind.
•
Show your story’s connections to Beowulf .
• Show connections between a myth from a different culture (not Greek) and
Beowulf.
• Show connections to a present day film or novel. Explain how your present day piece relates to Beowulf .
•
Prepare three discussion questions that can be asked throughout the presentation.
Students are expected to take notes throughout ALL presentations. At the end of the presentations your knowledge will be assessed as per teacher’s preference.
