ENG1P – Curious Essay Lead-up Since for most of us this will be the first major essay we write, we will be doing some lead-up to make it as painless as possible. In most written work, if it isn’t a personal response, there must be something that is being proved. This argument is called a thesis. Thesis – the main argument in an essay Topic Sentences – the smaller arguments of individual paragraphs; they must connect back to the main thesis. For our papers the thesis will be: Through the help of Christopher’s friends and family he is able to grow and change as a person. Now, you will brainstorm three people in Christopher’s life that help him grow as a person and explain how (in point form). Name: How they help Christopher grow/change: Mind/Concept Map You will do rough work for your essay by using an organizer to categorize your arguments. This mind map will be evaluated. You can do your mind map on the computer – using your google drive, or with markers and paper. Use the THESIS as the centre of your mind map. From there, branch out into your three people that help Christopher. The next branch will include how these people help. The final branch will include two quotations that prove your point. You should include a page number. One Example: Through the help of Christopher’s friends and family he is able to grow and change as a person. The Reverend Peters Reverend Peters makes time for Christopher by volunteering to help him write his Math A level test. This helps Christopher by allowing him to take a step towards his dream of going to University “And the Reverend Peters was the invigilator and he sat at a desk while I did the exam” (212) Mind Map Rubric Categories/ Criteria R Knowledge/ Understanding • • map shows a solid grasp of the content in the story partial quotations, page numbers and key words are used to show an understanding of the content Thinking/ Inquiry • /5 map effectively uses colour, codes, shapes or links to meaningfully clarify connections between ideas Communication • /5 ideas clearly connect to the main topic and move from general to specific Application • /5 /5 Conventions of language (grammar, sentence structure, spelling) are used correctly Level 1 /20 Level 2 Level 3 Level 4
