► This course focuses on fun and enjoyable activities that engage students to work
together in team settings. Activities in this course may include; soccer, basketball, volleyball, badminton, floor hockey, handball, football, rugby and ultimate Frisbee. In the health
units students learn about healthy relationships, mental health and nutrition.
► Students will be given the opportunity to build on individual and team skills and tactics
as they apply to a variety of games. Emphasis will be placed on all inclusive participation
in a team setting.
PLF 4M – RECREATION AND HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIVING LEADERSHIP
► This course enables students to explore the benefits of lifelong participation in active
recreation and healthy leisure and to develop the leadership and coordinating skills needed to plan, organize, and safely implement recreational events and other activities related
to healthy, active living.
► Student will also learn how to promote the benefits of healthy, active living to others
through mentoring and assisting them in making informed decisions that enhance their
well-being. Activities in this course may include: organizing and running an inter-school
intramural program, assisting Special Needs students during Special Olympics, planning
events for Grade 8 feeder schools, and assisting SSA during school tournaments.
► This course prepares students for university programs in physical education and
health and kinesiology and for college and university programs in recreation and leisure

► Prerequisite: Any Health and Physical Education course
PSK 4U – INTRODUCTORY KINESIOLOGY
► This course focuses on the study of human movement, and of body systems, factors,
and principles involved in human development. Students will learn about the effects of
physical activity on health and performance, the evolution of physical activity and sport,
and the physiological, psychological, and social factors that influence an individual’s
participation in physical activity and sport.
► Units of study may include: Anatomy, Physiology, Biomechanics, Nutrition, Sports
Injuries, Sport Sociology, Growth and Development, and the History of Sport. This course
prepares students for university programs in Physical Education, and Health, Kinesiology,
Recreation, Health Sciences, Health Studies and Sports Administration.
► Prerequisite: Any Grade 11 or 12 course in Health and Physical Education, or any
Grade 11 University or University/College preparation course in Science

PAF 40 - PERSONAL FITNESS
► This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle. Students will participate in a variety of enjoyable physical activities with the emphasis on improving personal
fitness components and levels.
► Activities in this course prepare students to design their own personal fitness programs, critique training programs, prepare healthy meals, participate in a learn to run 5km
program, and model some of the practices of a personal trainer

► GRADE 9 ► This course equips students with the knowledge and skills they need to make
healthy choices now and lead healthy, active lives in the future. Through participation in a wide range of physical activities, students develop knowledge and skills
related to movement competence and personal fitness that provide a foundation
for active living.
► Activities in this course may include: basketball, soccer, badminton, tennis,
volleyball, rugby, football, ultimate Frisbee, handball, and floor hockey. In the
health units, students will acquire an understanding of the factors and skills that
contribute to healthy development and learn how their own well being is affected
by, and affects, the world around them. Health units will include: healthy sexuality,
nutrition, the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, and personal
safety.
► In this course, students will employ strategies designed to develop goal setting
to build their sense of self, learn to interact positively with others, and develop their
ability to think critically and creatively.

► Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine
individual skills and team tactics, and participation in a variety of activities that
enhance personal competence.

► This course focuses on engaging students in individual activities that they enjoy.
The aim is for students to find activities that they will continue to do outside of
school with the intention of being lifelong active and healthy citizens.
► Students will use the FITT principle to design a personal fitness program to
meet their individual SMART goals. Emphasis will be placed on improving and
maintaining personal fitness levels while learning correct technique.
► Activities in this course may include: weight training, running, biking, functional
training, speed/agility training, boxing, zumba, martial arts, aquatics, pilates, and
TRX exercises. In the health units students will examine body image, nutrition,
substance use and abuse and personal safety.
► Outside school trips may include a visit to a local climbing gym, athletic facility or
an organized hike.
► This course focuses on the development of a healthy lifestyle and active participation in a variety of outdoor activities.
► Activities in this course may include: canoeing, biking, climbing, snowshoeing,
cross country skiing, orienteering, quinzee building, hiking, rock climbing and high
ropes. Trips include a canoeing and camping trip, a biking and camping trip and a
winter camping trip.
► Students will be given the opportunity to practice goal setting, decision making,
team building and the application of a variety of social and interpersonal skills.
► In the health units, students will examine the components of a reproductive health,
mental health and personal safety.

activities that promote lifelong healthy active living.

to develop goal-setting, communication, and social skills.

►This course focuses on improving and maintaining individual fitness levels.
► Activities in this course may include: weight training, running, biking, yoga, pilates,
interval training, functional training, agility/speed exercises, zumba, boxing, tai chi and
aquatics. In the health units students will examine reproductive health, mental health
and personal safety. As well, students will explore an in depth study of individual
nutrition. Field trips include 2 visits to a local gym or athletic facility.

and supportive environment. Students will access their own fitness levels through
fitness testing within a variety of classes that target the components of fitness. Students will design fitness programs to meet individual developed SMART goals.
