25.22 - Administrative Discretion
6. Participation in Emergency Rescue or Protective Work. Unit Managers may grant
employees excused leave from work to participate in emergency rescue or emergency protective
work in a civilian capacity during work hours. Emergency situations include, but are not limited
to, extreme weather conditions or disasters such as fire, flood, or other natural phenomena.
Up to 40 hours of excused leave in a calendar year may be granted. Unit Managers have the
authority to grant excused leave and shall determine that such leave is for an emergency and in
the interest of public welfare. Such emergency service is subject to the following conditions:
a. Performing work such as emergency medical technicians, paramedics, or Deputy
Sheriff, are limited to the employees local communities.
b. Employees shall not arrange normal work schedules and locations so as to be available to
perform such emergency services.
c. Excused leave for emergency services does not severely impact the work of the
Unit.
d. The period of official time that may be authorized for such assignment shall not
exceed a total of 40 working hours for any person during a calendar year and time allowed must
be within the regular tour of duty.
e. Timekeepers must keep records to insure the observation of the 40 hour limitation.
f. There shall be documentation that the employee requests and the Unit Manager
approves of the participation in emergency service during the time allowed.
